While the main character, Christopher, is widely interpreted as being Autistic, neither the script (nor the novel it’s based on) ever explicitly states this as fact. Neither the author of the source material nor the playwright is Autistic. In the novel, Christopher simply describes himself as a “mathematician with some behavioral difficulties.” Author Mark Haddon stated “If anything, it’s a novel about difference, about being an outsider, about seeing the world in a surprising and revealing way. It’s as much a novel about us as it is about Christopher.”
Autism is a developmental disability that affects how an individual communicates and interacts with others and their environment. While it’s often defined as a linear spectrum (from less Autistic to more Autistic), it’s more accurately described as a constellation. Autistic traits can manifest different from person to person, so no two Autistic people will display these traits the exact same way.
You may notice Christopher stimming during the play. Stim is short for “self-stimulating behaviors,” and can be a way for someone to express themselves or to calm down. Physical stims might look like flapping hands, rocking/swaying, tapping feet, but they could also be something like humming/making sounds, flicking fingers, pacing, or spinning. While commonly described as an Autistic trait, both Autistics and allistics (non-Autistics) stim.
