The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife Tako to Ama (蛸と海女)
"Sometimes plays find you at the exact right time. That was not the case with Fisherman’s. We found the script back in 2012 as naive college seniors eager to produce their own work (Yes, Steve - we’ve been obsessed with you for a long time). Fast forward 15 years and that same cohort now lives and works in Los Angeles. In the time since we first flirted with the script, we’ve collectively gone though our own sexual exploration and trauma, broken engagements, and one of us even left a man in a small seaside town...my point is sometimes plays find you at the right time, and sometimes they wrap around your brain like a tentacle, waiting for the exact right moment to come to fruition. We are thrilled to bring Fisherman’s to you now and hope you enjoy this wacky wonderful world as much as we do." - Kristin Shoffner
The Fisherman's Wife originally opened as a rolling World Premier on October 25th, 2012 - produced by Impact Theatre in Berkley, CA (Directed by Ben Randle), and by Ensemble Studio Theatre in Atwater Village, CA (Directed by Gates McFadden).
Steve Yockey is a celebrated playwright and Emmy-nominated screenwriter. He is best known for his imaginative, darkly funny collection of plays, and for creating “The Flight Attendant” on HBOMAX and “Dead Boy Detectives” on Netflix.
A note from the Playwright: "Tentacled creatures appeared in Japanese erotica long before animated pornography. Among the most famous of the early instances in an illustration from the novel "Kinoe no komatsu" of 1814 by Katsushika Hokusai - an example of Japanese erotic art. A scholarly paper by Danielle Talerico showed that although western audiences have often interpreted Hokusai's design as rape, Japanese audiences of the Edo period would have associate it with consensual sex. Edo audiences would recognize the legend of the female abalone diver Tamatori who steals a jewel from the Dragon King. During her egress, The Dragon King and his sea-life minions pursue her. Furthermore, within the dialogue in the illustration itself, the diver and two octopuses express mutual enjoyment."
