March 22, 2022, Longview, TX - Three years ago, Dedrick Weathersby’s play and Love letter to educators The New Teacher - A Comedy Stage Play with Music premiered at Bramlette Elementary STEAM Academy, a school within the Longview Independent School District, under the direction of Mrs. Nikita Mumphrey. “This play was first a book and later adapted for the stage. The ultimate goal was to create a family friendly show to give homage to educators and teach the youth life and functional skills through the vehicle of performing arts.”
The New Teacher is a fresh comedic play with new and original music. Jessie Jr. and Melissa along with the rest of their P.S. Pinewood Park peers are returning to school from the summer, with a mutual agreement of what school means to them and what kind of "Perfect" teacher they would love to have. Plans are derailed when the "No Nonsense" Principal introduces his plans for the new school year.
Written by Dedrick Weathersby, a power house cast is assembled to bring each character alive, while shining light on the meaning of "Organically Good Teachers." Teachers don't receive enough credit for their impact on students and families. Hence, the creation of this show, to bring a fun fictional story to the stage. Originally a children's book, now adapted for the stage. This show is family friendly and a celebration of togetherness.
The New Teacher (A Comedy Stage Play with Music) utilizes theatre to offer young children and families a way to engage in meaningful conversation about the treatment and appreciation of teachers and the impact in which they have on families. The vision is to highlight the arts and advocate for youth artists to pursue Theatre for a career, says producer and writer Dedrick Weathersby. A Message To The Parents
Dear Stage Parents,
You are the wonderful parents who support your artistic children to a ridiculous (and so very much appreciated) degree. You are the ones who come to each show and brag about your kid, saying, "They’re gonna be on Broadway or a Great Performer one day, I can just feel it." I want to take a moment to appreciate everything you do.
No one else on this planet will ever support artists like their parents. I have always heard about the unfortunate ones who aren’t as lucky—who get thrown out as the ‘spacey’ one, the black sheep of the family who is probably going to struggle. The mothers who lament that their kid could’ve been a doctor, or the fathers who think the profession isn’t masculine enough. Thank you, Stage Parents, for being the ones to take the high road and look at the career your young artist has chosen to pursue in a positive light. You will never fully understand just how much it means to us.
Part of that is because we don’t tell you often enough. Even if you are told ‘thank you’ a hundred times a day for everything you’ve done, that isn’t enough. It isn’t a small step to be comfortable with your kid being an actor. They’re going to face unending hardship, and let’s face facts here together: you know that better than they do. Sorry to the actors reading this, but you have to admit we are a bit bullheaded when it comes to doing what we love. We are going to risk everything and ignore a lot of the potential pitfalls because it’s so ingrained into our hearts. But God. Even if our parents never fully understand the exact process, they’ll always know about the struggles. But God!
So, thank you again. We double-cast the show to provide opportunities to numerous East Texas families, and we have succeeded. Arts Imitate Life and allow your artist(s) to use it as a vehicle of change.
PEACE and CONTINUED LIGHT AND LOVE
Sincerely,
Dedrick Weathersby
