About the Playwright
Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, collectively known as Jones Hope Wooten, enjoy the reputation of being three of the most popular and widely-produced playwrights in the United States. They specialize in writing laugh-out-loud comedies and creating vivid, strong roles for women. Because of their commitment to and support of local theatres across the nation, they’ve built a following with legions of loyal fans and have been dubbed “America’s Playwrights.” Among them, they’ve written classic television, hit movies and off-Broadway comedy.
Thousands of productions of their comedies – including their perennially popular The Savannah Sipping Society, Dearly Beloved, Christmas Belles, The Red Velvet Cake War, Always A Bridesmaid, The Sweet Delilah Swim Club and many more – have entertained millions of theatregoers across America, as well as in Canada, Denmark, Japan, the Netherlands, Australia, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Virgin Islands, England, Taiwan, France, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Scotland, Belgium, Panama, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Ecuador and Kenya.
Jessie Jones co-authored the classic, Southern-fried funeral comedy Dearly Departed and its feature film adaptation, Kingdom Come, which was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures. Nicholas Hope, an award-winning playwright, served as Director of Casting at Theatre Communications Group in New York City, The Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and ABC Television. Jamie Wooten was a writer/producer on the much-loved television series The Golden Girls.
From the Director
The Sweet Delilah Swim Club reads like a love letter to the importance of lifelong friendships. It is funny, yes, and has some really great comedic character development, but in the end, it delivers sweetness and a lot of heart. Plays don't often read so easily or quickly, but I flew through this one, and was excited to direct it. (Thank you, Dustin!)
Many women have a close circle of friends as depicted here, and if they don't, they wish they did: Women who shared a relatively short period of time in their lives together who then made a commitment -- come hell or high water -- to "escape" once a year to have some time with just each other. Over time, these gatherings take on their own life and make for memories way beyond those of the original convergence. Sweet Delilah (or Swim as it became known to us) has a lovely balance of smart, witty humor and broader life pictures that will make a fabulous "Ladies Night Out!" It will also give our male counterparts a little sneak peek into what an elusive "Girls' Weekend" might feel like. I hope you enjoy this amazing cast and have a wonderful night at SummerStage of Delafield!
