Follow Us:
Good evening, and welcome to the Bishop Dunne Drama Department's 2025 spring production, The Tragedy of Macbeth! We are so excited to have you all with us for this wonderful show.
Macbeth, often called "the Scottish play" due to a supposed curse hanging about the title, is the shortest of Shakespeare's tragedies and a famously bloody one too. After receiving a prophecy from a witch, the titular nobleman chooses to usurp the throne of Scotland through a gruesome assassination. Over the course of five acts, Macbeth transforms from a valiant warrior in loyal service to his king to a paranoid and violent tyrant, hellbent on holding onto his newly-acquired power at any cost. Alongside Lady Macbeth, his cold and calculating wife, the two carve a path of bloody ruin that unwinds the very strands of fate itself.
For all this darkness, there's a deep well of hope and light hiding beneath the play's rough exterior. Macduff, another nobleman who suffers greatly at Macbeth's hands, never once ceases to give up on his country and its future. The young prince Malcolm, little more than a teenage boy, strives to be a king who stands for justice and self-sacrifice. Perhaps most surprisingly of all is the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, sometimes called half-jokingly "Shakespeare's happiest couple." While they argue often, there is a deep love that resonates between them that, under different circumstances, could have led to something beautiful.
The students in this production have worked tirelessly to bring all of these varied aspects of the play to life. Supported by our wonderful technicians, orchestra, and stage manager, they have taken this show from a simple idea to the complex, brutal, moving tale Shakespeare wrote it to be. We hope you enjoy the show!
A note from the combat director, Robbie Voigt:
The combat you will see in this production is the results of months of work and training with these students. I cannot fully express how proud and impressed I am with the work and dedication each of them has put into learning the choreography and employing safe stage-combat practices. I started them out with learning simple basics on stage combat, ensuring that each student feels safe and in control during their combat sequences. From there, we slowly began to implement the choreography. Before each performance, we take the time to do what is called a “fight call” which is done to review each fight sequence at about 50% speed. This ensures that everyone has the choreography down and allows us to catch any potential accidents before they happen at full speed during the performance. The combat you see in this performance may seem to be fast, chaotic, or even dangerous at times. However, like dance choreography, each swing, clash, and death is heavily rehearsed till it is nigh perfect. Do not try what you see here tonight at home or without the supervision of a trained professional.
