Director’s Notes

The impact of a soldier being deployed stretches far beyond the combat zone. When a soldier goes to war, their entire family goes to war. Parents worry every time the phone rings; spouses become single parents; siblings take on extra-familial duties. I saw strong marriages dissolve, parents become estranged from their children, friends lose friends, and worst of all, fellow soldiers commit suicide in the aftermath of deployments.

Reintegration from deployment can be isolating and emotionally toxic. The world a deployed soldier returns to is unfamiliar even though it is filled with familiar people. To the family left at home, the deployed soldier is a palimpsest of the person they knew before. To the deployed soldier, time at home stops. To the family at home, the deployed soldier freezes in the moment of departure. When these two separated worlds collide, the dissonance explodes reality.
