Director's Note

The Prom is a show I have wanted to put up for a long time. It has such a strong powerful message and I truly don’t know why more theatre’s haven’t done it. When I think about what was the most important part for me in this show, it was the idea of finding a common human ground together. Most of these characters are from different upbringings, social classes and ages and the fact that they can all by the end of the show find a common ground through a journey of a lot of ups and downs is truly beautiful. I think the push for acceptance and love is the most powerful theme in this show and it is unwavering throughout. Each and every one of these actors has found a connection with each other through this process and it has made the show itself such a beautiful creative melting pot of artistic ideas. I could not be prouder of a cast than this one. The other amazing opportunity I had working with this group of performers was that it was a mixed show with both kids and adults. This gave an all too rare opportunity. This gave the chance for parents to join their kids on stage. So many shows are bluntly, 18+ or a kids show and there are so few chances for a show with all ages especially one that features the kids and the adults equally. At times in this show kids are playing adults and adults are playing kids and the encouragement and excitement this brought out was electric. Watching parents get to see their kids grow as performers, see the support systems theatre provides to their kids on a regular basis and getting to see live and up close the wins, and hard work that came to life on the stage was truly the best part of this show for me as a director. Watching these kids see that their parents struggled with some of the same things they do, but encouraging them, and helping them learn that dance, or get those lines. I learned the most as a young performer from doing shows with all ages and being able to see how different people learned things, and the help and support I got as a young performer from the adults I worked with shaped me as not only an actor but as a director as well. I am so thankful for this cast. This is why I direct, this is why theatre is important to me. These small moments, the leaps and bound people push themselves to try new things, and the evolution live in time of how each and every performer became the incredible star they are on stage. Like the proud fathers in the cast sharing the stage with their children, I am so proud of this show and this cast that I could never find enough words to fully express it.

Breanne Battey

Music Director
Breanne Battey - Music Director Breanne Battey (she/they) Music Director- I’m so thrilled to be making my music direction debut here at the Opera House. I’ve been music directing all across NH and into MA and ME for the last decade, but among them all, this show is special to me. As a transgender and lesbian woman, Emma’s story is very personal to me, and one that is more important than ever to tell. l It’s hard to know the best way to advocate and argue for the rights of LGBTQ people, either as queer people or as our allies, but it’s critically important in this moment to grapple with those questions. I truly hope you l enjoy tonight’s show.

Rose Chaffee

Choreographer
Rose Chaffee - Choreographer Rose Chaffee (they/them) is elated to have been able to work on such an incredible and important show. Rose would like to thank this cast for being so open and accepting of their ideas and of who they are. As a queer theatre artist in New Hampshire it can be very difficult to find safe spaces and these performers have shown nothing but love and acceptance since day one. It has been an honor to work with everyone involved. Rose would like everyone in the audience to really pay attention and activate their empathy when enjoying this show. The LGBTQIA+ community is under attack in our country today. Being able to work with an organization that supports these stories and the people they are about has been an honor for Rose. They would like to thank you all for opening your minds and experiencing a story that is so very important. Enjoy.
