Notes from the Director
There is hardly a story with more universal appeal than the one Charles Dickens penned in 1843 with its themes of redemption and generosity. The greeting “Merry Christmas” was popularized following the appearance of the story and the name “Scrooge” and the exclamation “Bah! Humbug!” first entered the English language. It has been argued, however, that the book’s singular achievement is the powerful influence it exerts upon its readers. According to historians, today’s observance of Christmas is largely the result of a Victorian revival of the holiday spearheaded by A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Dickens influenced many aspects of Christmas that are celebrated today, such as family gatherings, seasonal food & drink, dancing, games and a festive generosity of spirit.
Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL remains popular. It has never been out of print and has been adapted to film, stage, opera and other media multiple times. Today we bring you one of its many adaptions, and in the Spirit of the Season, we wish you a “Merry Christmas.” Carmen Ball
