Producer's Note:

"Liza is a total entertainer, a show person the likes of which is hard to find these days. Liza’s talents have known no bounds, and her contribution to Broadway, film and even a hilarious stint on television’s "Arrested Development," make her so deserving of this, a glorious celebration of her 75 years on Earth. I’m thrilled to be able to do this for Liza, and for her friends and fans in a safe, socially distant way to say we all love you Liza—Happy Birthday Darling!"

- Daniel Nardicio

Liza May Minnelli

Perhaps no three words in the English language better personify show business than Liza May Minnelli. The daughter of legendary film maker Vincent Minnelli and one of the greats of film and stage, Judy Garland, Liza was born 75 years ago today in the veritable home of show business-- Hollywood, California.

It was almost a given, preordained, that the young daughter of such show business royalty would pursue performing. What no one could predict, however, was that Liza Minnelli would conquer stage, screen, records, concerts and later on, even television. She became a nightclub performer at the age of 16, won her first Tony at 19, released three albums through Capitol Records by 20, and received her first Oscar nomination at 24. Liza became a fashion icon in her teens with her signature pixie cut- the result of having to chop her locks when playing around with some friends ended with a wad of gum in her hair. That, plus her red lips and ensembles, made her a muse to designers like Halston, and a creative muse for such Broadway luminaries as John Kander and Fred Ebb, who Liza famously claimed “created her.”

Liza left home and moved to New York to become a Broadway performer. “To be on Broadway, you have to go to New York. So I went to New York. And that was the last time that I took any money from my parents” When asked if having famous parents helped her career, Liza responded, “People don’t want to spend money on a publicity stunt- you have to deliver.” And deliver she did. She delivered so well that when she was 19, Minnelli became the youngest person to win the leading actress in a musical Tony for her turn in the 1965 Kander and Ebb musical Flora the Red Menace. Thus beginning a long standing relationship between the hit making duo and Liza. Her other Broadway credits include Liza, Chicago, The Act, The Rink, Victor/Victoria, Minnelli on Minnelli and Liza's at the Palace.

From Steppin Out to Sex in The CityTell Me That You Love Me Junie Moon to Arthur, and the role that cemented her into the status of bona fide movie star, Cabaret, Liza Minelli dominated the screen. She received her first Oscar nomination for her riveting performance in the romantic comedy The Sterile Cuckoo. It's been often said that Liza’s infamous telephone scene is one of the greatest performances in film history. She did the scene on her first day on set when production began, in one take with no edits. Liza has said that after doing this scene in one take she knew that she understood the character and that it gave her a lot of confidence as an actress. That confidence was displayed in the role of a lifetime as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. The 1972, Bob Fosse-directed big-screen musical earned eight Oscars, including one for Liza’s work as American expatriate in 1930s Berlin during the rise of Nazism. Her father Vincent Minnelli advised her to not fashion Sally Bowles after Marlene Dietrich, but Louise Brooks instead. The look may have been Brooks, but the performance was pure Liza.

In 1961 Liza’s mother, Judy Garland, brought her and her siblings onstage at Carnegie Hall- it was apparent to all then that Liza was a live performer. Liza’s high octane live shows are a thing of lore, and to see her in concert is to have seen, what many describe as, a tour de force. Tony Bennett became one of Liza’s early mentors, as was the late French Armenian singer Charles Aznavour, whom Liza has credited with teaching her how to inhabit a song. Liza single handedly created the one-woman television show, at a time when no one had done that: “I thought it was a good idea” Liza said “Someone told me that I couldn’t do that- and all of these rules, but you gotta try.” That show, Liza with a Z, won 4 Emmys and a Peabody award.
Through her movies, TV appearances, concerts and recordings, new generations are continuing to be inspired by Liza. She has appeared as herself on TV in SmashThe Voice: UK, So You Think You Can DanceThe Apprentice and more, and she is also known for her portrayal of Lucille Austero in the comedy series Arrested Development. Liza has dedicated much time to amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, which was co-founded by Elizabeth Taylor. Liza has also supported the Great American Songbook Foundation, Broadway Cares, and The Actors Fund, a beneficiary of tonight’s event.

Liza, Wishing you a very happy and wonderful Birthday celebration! I’ve followed you most of my life since the’60s and been very fortunate to see you several times live- twice in New York and once with Frank on your tour with he and Sammy (Sammy had to drop out prior to our event but my program includes him!) I think my favorite was at the Radio City Music Hall! But you’ve always been incomparable! Never forget the year you were nominated for Cabaret amongst some VERY tough competition but I was positive that your name would be announced and of course it was! Cabaret is likely my all-time favorite film but ANYTHING I’ve seen you in has been just incomparable. Always! Thanks so much for carrying on the fabulous family talent with your very own unique talent! I so appreciate all you have given me and the world and thank you for always making it through what could be a very tough life and unusually difficult circumstances at times! But you’re love for your Mom and Dad always shine brightly through and I’ve always caught a glimpse of them in the diamond-sparkle in your beautiful eyes! Can’t wait to watch tonight! Sending you love ❤️ always from someone in whose life you made a huge difference and gave me the courage to push through life no matter how difficult. You are truly an amazing and wonderful woman! Enjoy your tribute! Eternal love♥️🎼🌹♥️ Gary Banta

Thank you for the joy! I saw you 5 different times in shows in Boston in the 80’s and 90’s ... you always stepped out of the way and let your dancing boys dance, you always lost your lashes to sweat ... your star power took my breath away every time. You helped inspire me to become a performer. You have used your gifts to bring joy to so many. Happy Birthday! I am so glad you were born. Here’s to many more happy days!!!

Thank you for a lifetime of amazing performances Liza. I have seen hundreds of your performances and everyone is more enjoyable than the next. One of the top 10 highlights of my life was having dinner with you and Ben Vereen at Les Pyrenees Restaurant after his performance in Jellies Last Jam. Your opening line was “thank you so much for letting me join you- what a day I had it started with going to Bloomingdale’s and slipping on a button in the fitting room and falling down”. OMG - and it just got better from there for ffour hours. Happy Birthday Liza - you truly are a legend

Hi Liza, happy birthday to a true legend. I have seen you many times on Broadway ("The Act" with "Arthur in the Afternoon" keeps ringing in my ears) and of course in movies...yes, you were robbed with "The Sterile Cuckoo"....."Come Saturday Morning"... and in Cabaret, my favorite song, perhaps of all time is "Maybe This Time" and I've replayed that, applying to my own life, several times. I sent you a birthday greeting years ago, and you responded with a beautiful autographed picture..."Howard....Love, Liza" with a happy face. I have had the honor of meeting you twice (last at "Rockers on Broadway") and you could not have been more warm and gracious. Finally, I loved your performance with my birthday twin (same day...not known if same year), Jim Caruso. All the very best, Liza. Your parents would rightfully be so, so proud of you.
Duane Shell

Happy Birthday, Liza! Your are an incredible actor and person. I am only six months younger than you and you first touched my heart when I was a second year medical student with your performance in The Sterile Cuckoo. I was so devastated for you. I still love hearing you sing City Lights and Arthur in the Afternoon! You will never know how many people you have touched so many ways over so many years! Dear Liza - I remember Carnegie Hall 1979 like it was last Tuesday - Gloria Swanson held court in the center box, Lee Liberace sat two rows behind me and out you came, mesmerizing every one of us that evening with a truly unforgettable performance. I had never heard of standing ovations throughout a concert - once in the middle of the song! You were spectacular that evening, and you have always delivered memorable and, for so many, life-altering performances. I’ve been so fortunate to have seen you as early as “The Act”, as recently as your Disney Hall concert a few years back, and so many outstanding performances in between. I was so privileged and fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and speak with you a number of occasions, and I cherish those moments. You truly are a spectacular performer, we your audience are bowled over by your talent and generosity, and I hope you know how much you mean to us and how much we love you. I can’t even imagine how proud your parents would be of you and what you’ve accomplished. Happy Birthday Liza!

Happy birthday, fellow Fish!! As a teen, trying to figure out how to "be" in the world, you were such an emblem to me of how one could embrace one's vulnerability AND strength, and weave them into one. As an adult and astrologer, I now see them as precisely the paradox of Pisces ;) and its twelfth spot on the wheel, the place we go before we transform our human souls into something beyond ... so I thank you for holding that space open for me, while I grew up into someone who can now hold that space open for others. Wishing you much delight and serenity this coming year and all the rest :)
