I have to admit something: I did not know this show when it was first suggested by our current students. I was unaware of the off-Broadway production or of the fact that it has become a cult hit among young theatre artists. However, as I began to read and listen to Alice By Heart, I was struck by its delicate balance of whimsy, imagination and heartbreak. This show is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the stories we carry with us can keep us alive. Alice By Heart invites us to escape, to dream, and to find courage through sharing a story with a loved one and with those we have just met. Bringing this play to life here at the University of Montevallo has been profoundly meaningful. For many of our students, this story mirrors their own journey: navigating uncertainty, holding tight to creativity, and learning how to let go while still believing in what endures. Their artistry, vulnerability, and sense of wonder have filled every rehearsal room with a kind of magic that only comes from young theatre-makers discovering both themselves and their craft. This is a bittersweet moment: this will be my final production at the University of Montevallo before I step into a new chapter as Executive Producer of Theatre Tuscaloosa. And Alice By Heart feels like the perfect goodbye. It is a story about holding onto what has shaped you, even as you move forward into the unknown. To my students: thank you for reminding me that the heart of theatre beats strongest when it belongs to all of us. The future looks bright. Welcome to Wonderland. |
