About Our Mid Island Collaboration
Malaspina Theatre at Vancouver Island University
VIU’s Malaspina Theatre, Malaspina Theatre lobby, and Mike Taugher Studio are ‘living classrooms’; unique facilities where students completing diploma and degree requirements can learn, develop skills, and gain valuable hands-on experience. The Theatre facilities are primarily teaching spaces, but also function as a campus resource available to internal users and as a community venue available to off-campus external user groups as well.
VIU’s Malaspina Theatre and Mike Taugher Studio welcome participants and guests to diverse public performances that showcase university and community talents and skills. The facilities are creative spaces, where imagination, individuality and diversity are celebrated.
NDSS Dance
Formed in 2017 and led by Kelly Barnum and Sarah Kielly, the NDSS Dance company includes grade eight to twelve students from Nanaimo District Secondary School. Each fall they create an original dance production for entry in the Vancouver Island One Act Festival and North Island Regional Drama Festival. Each spring, the group switches focus to their competitive season and begins refining dances for CORE Nanaimo and ELEMENTS High School Dance Competition.
Kelly, Sarah, and the students are thrilled to be the only high school group involved in the show and would like to thank Dean and the entire Schmooze family for inviting them to the party. It’s been far too long since they’ve been able to take the stage and couldn’t have asked for a more perfect opportunity.
OV Arts Centre
You'll find The OV in the heart of downtown Nanaimo, offering affordable creative space and a variety of entertainment & events. Our venue has a 96-seat theatre, rehearsal/workshop hall, concession, greenrooms, and the best 3-camera streaming system in town! #SeeYouAtTheOV!
Qualicum Beach School of Dance
QBSD was established in 1999 in the beautiful town of Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, BC.
Since opening QBSD in 1999, Owner and Artistic Director, Shari Selva and her staff strive to create a compassionate and enriching learning environment balanced with a disciplined approach to dance and theater arts. Students are encouraged to set and pursue personal levels of achievement in the discipline of their choice, and nurture within themselves, a lifelong love of music and dance whether they are aspiring professionals or recreational performers. The hope is that all students enjoy their classes and gain strength, poise, self esteem and a love of movement that continues throughout their lives."
Theater to me means community, to share space between the audience and the performers. Live performance touches and impacts lives like nothing else in the world! QBSD is more than excited to be back on stage again after such a long pause and exited to share the stage with an exceptional cast of talent!
Satyr Players
The Satyr Players are Vancouver Island University's official theatre club! Satyr Players has become sort of a misnomer this year. We will still be producing plays, but we want to facilitate creativity in all ways. Creating a space for community, creativity and connection is our main goal. Facilitating creative visions and passion projects as well as bringing people together is something our executive team holds near and dear to our hearts, so we will be fighting for a space to do that in. We want people to connect as they haven't been able to over this past year.
Starting in 1995, Satyr has worked to create more shows on top of the main stage productions offered each year. This includes our annual Rocky Horror Picture Show, the entirely student run One-Act Festival, our fairly new burlesque shows and other innovative ideas we are constantly searching for.
We strive to give opportunities for students to participate in the wonderful world of theatre. This includes performing, directing, design, writing, and many more never ending roles that are essential to telling our stories.
Schmooze Productions
When Dean Chadwick co-founded Schmooze Productions with his wife Diane in 1999, he dreamed of producing theatrical opportunities for local artists. Now, 20+ years later, he finds himself surrounded with incredible directors, designers, crew, musicians and performers. Schmooze Productions are able to create incredible shows each season that rely on the talents of hundreds of people. Creating local live theatre really is a dream come true.
To Schmooze, theatre is an integral part of life, as it endeavours to recreate thoughts, concepts, and emotions that challenge us to reflect upon our own daily choices.
Western Edge Theatre
Since 2003, Western Edge has produced new plays and other contemporary theatre on an island in the Salish Sea. We are firmly rooted in our community, and look to it for stories and plays that will resonate here, while also looking beyond the shores of our island for fresh sources of inspiration.
Theatre builds empathy, community, and, sometimes, hope.

Wendy has had a passion for theatre for as long as she can remember. She has found herself in multiple roles both on stage and behind the scenes in a plethora of theatre groups on Vancouver Island over the decades. Her most recent projects include directing 'The Diary of Anne Frank' and 'Every Brilliant Thing' for Nanaimo Theatre Group and 'Our Ghosts 'for Western Edge. She is both thrilled and honored to be working with the All Together Now Mid-Island Edition Team and to celebrate the re-emergence of Musical Theatre in our rather strange new world.

MTI's Free Musical, ALL TOGETHER NOW, Is Now Available for Licensing

Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) has just announced that theatres around the world can now license All Together Now! - A Global Event Celebrating Local Theatre. This worldwide event celebrates the return of live theatre and allows organizations to locally produce and perform an exclusive musical revue featuring songs from MTI's beloved shows over the weekend of November 12-15, 2021.
MTI's All Together Now! is entirely free-of-charge to license with no royalty or rental fees. Participating organizations may license MTI's All Together Now! as a fundraiser for their theatre and perform it live, live-streamed, or a combination of both over a four-day period from November 12 - 15, 2021.
Licensees will also receive a number of MTI's innovative theatrical resources to help with rehearsals, marketing and performances - all completely free.
"The excitement for All Together Now! among our customers is growing by the day," said Drew Cohen President and CEO of MTI Worldwide. "Our theatre industry colleagues have also been incredibly supportive and we are thrilled to have a growing roster of Partners (listed below) contributing from so many disciplines within the professional theatre community. This is truly a collaborative effort, and we are all extremely excited that any and every type of theatre from schools to the pros has the opportunity to produce MTI's All Together Now! in their communities."
MTI's Chief Operating Officer and Director of Education & Development, John Prignano remarked that, "We've streamlined our licensing process for this special event and there are no restrictions or limits on how many theatres in a particular geographical area can license the revue. Instead, we hope that as many theatres as possible produce the revue on their own, or come together with other organizations in their communities to mount a joint production. We also wanted to give theatres as much creative input as possible. The revue can be presented as a concert-like performance or groups can fully stage, choreograph and costume each song as it is presented in the full version of the show. Theatres are encouraged to feature as diverse a cast as possible, in order to reflect the composition of the entire community. All Together Now! is about bringing people back to the theatre, whether as audience members or cast, crew and musicians. Productions will benefit from a variety of races, genders, abilities, body types, and sizes, so we encourage groups to spread diversity as best they can across all the roles in the production."
