DIRECTOR's NOTE

I always choose a play based on how many I think I may have this year as well as the requirements needed for a set on our tiny stage. When searching, Broadway Lullaby popped up and I couldn't get it out of my head. There were just so many possibilities with this show that I had to produce this play as our fall show for the season above all the others.

In staging Broadway Lullaby, our aim is to capture the hopeful, imaginative spirit of the late 1920s through the eyes of the girls of the 42nd Street Orphanage. At first glance, this is a story of hardship, centered on an institution with all the trappings of a Dickensian tale—strict and stingy guardians, harsh rules, and a pervasive gloom. But... when Ginny Hobbs arrives with a trunk full of Vaudeville "magic," this bleak world is transformed. The orphanage's communal room becomes a portal to their own dreams and imaginations, as their "plays within a play" reveal the dazzling potential of the stage and their talents.

This play, filled with imagination and heart, reminds us that creativity and friendship can thrive, even in the most difficult circumstances. We explore the powerful contrast between the stark reality of the girls' lives and the vibrant, theatrical world they create together. With a healthy dose of slapstick humor, we invite you to be transported back in time. Join us in celebrating the resilience of these young artists as they find their voices and turn a mafia con artist's scam into a genuine shot at a brighter future.

Kellie Olson, DIRECTOR
