Director's Note

Damn Yankees holds a very special place in my heart—it’s my favorite “classic” musical of all time. It was, in fact, the very first staged production I ever saw as a kid, when my big brother took me to his high school’s spring musical. Sitting in that theatre, wide-eyed and spellbound, I was instantly hooked. That experience introduced me to the magic of live performance and ignited a lifelong passion for theatre that has shaped the course of my life.

When I first considered directing Damn Yankees, I thought about how I might bring it into the 21st century—modernizing it, updating themes, or shifting perspectives. But the deeper I dove into the script and score, the more I realized that this show doesn’t need reinventing. Its charm, wit, heart, and timeless energy live squarely—and perfectly—within its original time period. I chose instead to embrace the world it was written in, allowing the story to shine as it always has: as a fantastical, funny, and poignant look at dreams, temptation, and redemption, all wrapped in baseball and Broadway pizzazz.

This production came together under a condensed timeline, and I could not be prouder of this incredible cast and production team. Their dedication, focus, and collaborative spirit have been nothing short of inspiring. Every rehearsal was filled with heart, hustle, and humor—just like the show itself. It has been a joy to watch this team bring these iconic characters to life with such passion and professionalism.

A heartfelt thank you to Cockpit in Court for giving me the opportunity to direct this show that means so much to me. It’s been a full-circle moment, and I’m grateful beyond words.

Enjoy the show—and remember: you gotta have heart.

Always,

Jason Crawford

I studied at Loch Raven Technical Academy, where I focused on the performing arts and really started to discover my voice through musical theatre. I spent about seven years performing with Children’s Playhouse of Maryland, where I got to take on some amazing roles—like The Escapologist in Matilda and Jay in Descendants. I’ve also been part of the ensemble in shows like Anything Goes and Singin’ in the Rain, which helped me grow and learn how to work as a team on stage. With Cockpit in Court, I’ve had the chance to play fun characters like Banzai in The Lion King, Iago in Aladdin, and most recently, Zeke in their production of High School Musical. Each show has pushed me creatively and made me fall more in love with the process. Right now, I’m performing in Damn Yankees, and I’m loving every second of it. The cast, the music, the energy—it’s been one of my favorite theatre experiences so far. Outside of musical theatre, I’m also working toward a career in TV and film, both as an actor and a director. On top of that, music is a huge passion of mine. Whether I’m performing, filming, or writing songs, I just love telling stories and creating moments people can connect.
