Kiara Akbar - H2O, tapping seagull, band member Kiara Akbar is a senior in PACE and has been in LBPolyDrama for all four years of high school. Throughout the years she’s been in various plays including “I Don’t Wanna Talk About It”, the maid in “Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery,” Helena and a fairy in “A Midsummers Night’s Dream”, and a Barb Babe and a tap dancer in last years musical, “Something Rotten”. She always loves performing on stage and has so much fun. She’s so grateful for her family, friends and all the opportunities. She’s so excited to perform her final high school plays, as she’ll always remember them.

Jaden Alexius - Grimsby (Understudy), Sailor, Seaweed Jaden is a senior in PACE within play pro that has done theater for four years. He’s been in musicals such as Shrek, Chicago, and Something Rotten, starring as Peter Quince. Jaden has also been in plays such as Ghostlight and The Legend Of Mt. Hurr, and loves to be in everything he can be in. I hope everyone has a amazing show, and I love everyone reading this XD

Alex Bernal-M. - Pilot/ Frog Alex is a Junior in CIC and the Drama Club Vice President . He is part of the Play Pro class and staring in his third musical. Previously he has been in “Something Rotten” as Lord Clapham and in “Chicago” as a MC. He has also been in Play Pro’s fall play “Ghostlight” as Jackson. Recently he has also won 3rd place in our annual Poetry Slam. He loves to read, write poetry, and listen to music.

Paul Binuya - Sailor, Band Member, Singing Frog, Courtier Paul Binuya is a Sophomore at Poly Highschool making his debut in his first ever musical at Poly. Paul has starred in other works at Poly including a student written play “Her Journey” where he was a Co Star and the Advanced theater class play “Too much light makes the baby go blind” where he’s played a numerous amount of roles. Additionally, Paul is a member of the Polyester Improvisation group. Paul would like to thank Michael McGuinness, Nwijuan Stanley, and for bringing him out of his comfort zone.

Chelsea Blackshear - Dancing fish and creature/flower Hi, I’m Chelsea I’ve done a couple of performances for poly. Like many dance performances and acting in a play called one sided love. This will be my first time being in a musical and I am happy to be performing along side so many amazing performers.

Gia Bottegoni - Windward Gia is a hardworking sophomore PACE student at Poly who loves to involve herself in all things performance. In the fall, her schedule was filled with marching unit practices, advanced class play rehearsals, and varsity improv team practices! Apart from theatre, she's on the stage playing percussion with the All-District honor band, and competing with drumline at winter percussion competitions. However, in the winter, it's all things musical, where this year she is excited to star as Windward, one of King Triton's seahorse apprentices!

Lola is so excited to shell-ebrate her second musical here at Poly! She was ensemble in 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘙𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯!, and makes a second appearance as a so-fish-ticated seahorse her sophomore year. She has been otter-ly drowning in theater, taking part in the Polyester Improv Team, winning Outstanding Freshman in the theatre department last year and performing in the play, 𝘛𝘰𝘰 𝘔𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘓𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘔𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘢𝘣𝘺 𝘎𝘰 𝘉𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘥 this year with her advanced class. I'm shrimp-ly krilled to have you watch our sand-sational musical. (P.S. Sorry for all the puns 😝)

Francisco Calderon - Scuttle Francisco Calderon, also known as Frankie, is a dedicated junior in the Poly Arts program. He has showcased his talent in roles like Tom Snout in “Something Rotten,” Mogpin in “Ghost Light,” and Snug in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” In addition to acting, Frankie is an active member of the stage crew, enjoying the behind-the-scenes work to ensure smooth productions. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, Frankie is always eager to learn and grow in his craft.

Alexander Cardenas

Alexander Cardenas, a senior in the Poly Arts pathway makes his musical debut starring in The Little Mermaid The Musical! His journey with theater began working backstage as a Stage Crew member, moving set pieces and prop design before getting inspired by the cast of Something Rotten! In that same year he participated in the Poly Productions student shows. Currently he is apart of the Varsity team for Polyesters improv team, as well as being apart of the Poly Chamber Choir and Vocal Jazz One. Shoutout to my family for their support, and to my partner for his support!

Kayden Cardenas

Kayden is a sophomore in the MEDS pathway at poly. Kayden is making his debut in Poly Theater but he is no stranger to preforming arts due to his work experience with The LB poly high school stage crew and he is no stranger to "Disney's the little mermaid" as it was his first musical he ever saw. Kayden's hobbies include swimming, biking and hiking just to name a few and now his new found hobby is theater. He is excited for the future productions here at poly Thank you to my Nana who has supported me and is my biggest fan throughout this musical journey.

Alaina Castillo - Dancer (Tap and Ensemble) This will be Alaina’s second musical with Poly High School. She was a tap dancer in Poly's 2024 musical, Something Rotten and had a lead role in Poly Production's play, Her Journey. Alaina has also been featured in several print and commercial campaigns for major brands such as Disney, Mercedes, Crest, Google, and GAP. Outside of theater, she is a varsity cheerleader, the president of the EIC club, and ASB’s sophomore class president. Alaina would like to thank the drama department, her family, friends, and her dog Henry for their continued support.

Cailey Christen - Adella the mersister Cailey is a senior and is very excited to be part of the Little Mermaid! This will be Cailey's first production at Long Beach Poly, although her other favorite roles she has had are Patty Simcox in Grease (TKTC), Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins (TKTC), and Jack's mother in Into the Woods (TKTC). Miles Chum - Prince Eric Miles is a Junior entering his second year with Poly Drama as Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid. Last year, Miles was Nigel, a lead in the musical “Something Rotten.” Miles is in Play Production and has experience acting in many productions at Poly. Additionally, Miles enjoys being handy and dedicates his time helping stage crew construct sets and props.

Devyn Curamen

Devyn Curamen - Flounder Devyn Curamen, a ninth grader at PACE, has been involved in theatrical productions since kindergarten, initially as a dancer. Her journey into acting began in middle school with her captivating debut as Moana in Moana Jr., a role that ignited her passion for both singing and acting. This transformative experience paved the way for her current achievement—securing the role of Flounder in the Poly Production of The Little Mermaid.

Leah Diaz

H20
Leah Diaz - H20 Leah is a vibrant sophomore at CIC, diving into the world of theater for the very first time this year. She's playing the role of H2O in the production of The Little Mermaid, a show that holds a special place in her heart. When she's not bringing the magic of water to life on stage, Leah can be found swimming for the Poly swim team, playing her violin, or cheering, embracing her love for the water and music in and out of the theater. Being part of this production has allowed her to connect with so many new people, building lasting friendships and creating unforgettable memories. Leah is beyond excited to be a part of this special show and can't wait to share her passion for The Little Mermaid with the world.

Reanny S. Dizon

Reanny S. Dizon - Flotsam Reanny S. Dizon is a sophomore in the MEDS pathway at Long Beach Polytechnic Highschool. This is her first LBP production, but has been in previous musicals at Glazier Elementary school. Her previous roles being Rafiki in the Lion King JR and Elsa in Frozen JR. She is very excited to be making a return to the musical theatre world, and hopes people will enjoy her performance.

Stacey A Drew - Ursula Stacey A Drew (they/she) is in her fourth year as not only a PARTS student, but in the Poly Theater Program. They have debuted in multiple “mother” roles including but limited to Mama Ogre and Mama Bear in Poly’s production of Shrek the Musical, and their role as Matron Mama Morton in Poly’s Production of Chicago the Musical. And now her as Ursula in Poly’s Production of The Little Mermaid the Musical. They are sad to end their time at Poly but excited for what the future may bring with them wide range of interests and talents. And they will forever keep their time here at Poly near and dear to their heart.

Sasha Flores - Atina (Mersister) This will be Sasha's second year participating in the annual musical here at Poly. She was part of the ensemble in last year's "Something Rotten" and is now one of Ariel's 6 sisters in this year's musical. Eliza Floto

Eliza Floto - Poor Soul Eliza is Poly freshman. She has previously acted in the Summer Film Camp feature, “Wizardess of Science” and its sequel. She has trained with Modern Apsara Cambodian American Performing Arts Company (formerly known as Khmer Arts Academy), and has ten years of mixed martial arts experience. Now she is excited to work on stage with a live audience in her first musical, and wants to thank her family and friends for their support.

Kennedy Fuller

Kennedy Fuller - Flotsom (The eel) Kennedy Fuller is set to make her mark with her third production and second musical at Long Beach Polytechnic. She has showcased her talents in three acts of "Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind," performed as a dancer in "Something Rotten" the Musical, and played Flotsam in "The Little Mermaid" the Musical. Before high school, she landed her first role as the Genie in the Alladin Jr. production at Leland Stanford Middle School in the 8th grade (Link to performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIlJJ_OW16w&t=1714s). Kennedy is also taking her career seriously by working with professional playwright, screenwriter, and actor Marcus Folmar, as she actively pursues playwrighting opportunities, including applying for the prestigious Northwestern Summer Playwriting Intensive program.

Daphne Gates

Daphne Gates - Mersister Daphne is a sophomore in Pace who is super excited to be participating in her third musical at polytechnic high school. Daphne has been in Shrek and Something Rotten at poly, as well as Legally Blonde, Frozen jr., Seussical, the Little Mermaid, and more. She hopes to take part in theater(improv/play pro), dance(team), and choir(hopefully vocal jazz/chamber) at Poly in the years to come. Daphne is currently involved in singing, acting, and dancing through both Poly and extracurricular programs, and is ecstatic for the year ahead.

Milan Gramata-Massey

Milan Gramata-Massey - ensemble My passion for the performing arts has been a significant part of my life, especially in singing and dancing. I have been a choir member for over seven years and have been taking dance classes since my childhood. I am enthusiastic about double majoring, with one of my majors being music, and if that isn't possible, I aim to minor in it. Additionally, I plan to take theater classes. Last year, I participated in "Something Rotten" as a Renaissance Lady and in the student-directed play "One-sided Love" as a chef and love interest. Currently, as a senior, I am an ensemble member playing a flower and puppeteer in the enchanting production of "The Little Mermaid."

Logan Hong - Sailor/Stingray/Poor Soul Logan Hong is a senior in PACE and is in his second year in the theatre department. He has been a part of last year's musical: "Something Rotten!" as Various Speaking Roles and this year’s fall play: “Ghostlight” as Kelvin. Logan is a part of both Theatre & Stage Crew and enjoys the best of both worlds! He hopes to deliver an amazing performance and hopes you all enjoy it! Amira Inui - Ensemble Amira Inui is a freshman at Poly High School and in the CIC program. She has performed in musicals such as Matilda and Alice in Wonderland with the Myart theatre group. Her favorite role was the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland and is excited to be on the stage again in Poly's production of The Little Mermaid.

Parker Johnston - Sailor Parker Johnston is an ambitious young actor with the world ahead of him. Despite being just 17, Parker Johnston became the head carpenter. He was always fond of the stage, so while building the world of The Little Mermaid he became apart of the ensemble. You might recognize him from Long Beach Poly’s Chicago or in YaYa's Performance Academy as a blind mice.

Chloe Lorenzo - Ensemble This is Chloe Lorenzo’s LBP musical debut! She will be playing various roles in this show, The Little Mermaid. As a sophomore in PACE, she has been in 2 previous shows, “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind”, as various speaking roles, as well as the 2023-2024 Poetry Slam. In her free time, Chloe enjoys embroidery, singing, and tennis. She would like to thank her parents & Alice for the love and support.

Zoey Martinez - Andrina Zoey, who's a senior in pace, is Andrina in "the little mermaid" musical. Previously playing Katalin in "chicago" (2023), she also comes from having experience in chamber choir, vocal jazz I, and dance team at Poly. besides performing arts, she enjoys playing the guitar and piano and is president of Coast Club, a club at poly dedicated to ocean conservation. She thanks her friends, family, and especially castmates for their everlasting support during this musical.

Michael McGuinness - Grimsby Michael is a senior and has been in Drama for three years now and has been in Chicago, and Something Rotten as well as Ghostlight, murder mystery, and A Midsummer night’s dream. Michael is also captain of the Improv team: The Polyesters, and is verklempt at the idea of ending high school and going on to new horizons

Milia plays Basketball here at poly and is also a dancer out side of school. Her favorite thing about theatre at poly is the community and friendships that are made during the entire process.

Simone Millsap - Aquata Simone Millsap is is a Senior and is spending her first year in a Poly Musical playing Aquata. Though Simone has not been in theater long, she has loved reminiscing on her elementary school days where she played Lucy in Charlie Brown. She enjoys playing for Poly’s Chamber Orchestra and Beach Volleyball team. Her favorite thing about The Little Mermaid is performing with new and old friends. Abigail Odilon - H20 Abigail Odilon, This is my first musical performance at this school. During the rehearsal, I had fun. Creating and playing role as H2O. I have realized that it is a bigger production of me having a bigger part as being water. Creating the wave's, the motion feels like a little happier is just dancing. I am president of esports and doing both the musical and gaming. It’s a little complicated. I’m happy that my dad is a supporter of me doing my dreams so thank you to my Dad.

Shila Regalado - Andrina(mersister), Maid,Fish,Princess Shila Regalado is a senior in PARTS, she has been in many plays throughout her four years. Shila has been in 9 plays in total, such as Garbriela in “Ghostlight”, Hermia in “A mid summers nights dream”, a Tap dancing egg in” Something Rotten” and Gertrude in “murder mystery at the murder mystery” and many others. She loves to be involved in theater and is drama club president. She is thankful for all of the experiences and connections that she will carry with her. Syreeta Roberts - Sebastian Syreeta is a Sophomore at Poly High School and this is her second year doing theatre. She was in Something Rotten The Musical last year as a Tap Dancer & had a "Sad Little Egg" solo. She was in many productions such as: The Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind play, Poly Productions, The Poetry Slam, and The Polyesters Improv Team. She is excited and hopeful to continue with theatre and acting for many years to come. LBPolyDrama has loads of amazing opportunities and she feels so blessed to be able to work in it. Syreeta loves to dance & play online games in her free time. She would like to thank her Dad for driving her back home from very late nights of rehearsals and her whole family that is here tonight to support her.

Danielle Robinson - Ursula This is Danielle Robinson she is a senior in the Poly arts program apart from being in the drama program she’s in Chamber choir,Jazz 1 and will be competing in this year’s Jackrabbit pageant!!! She has been in Chicago (Pop) & Something Rotten(Bea Bottom).Her performance in Something Rotten gave her the honor of being nominated for the Jerry Herman Awards. You can find her performing in this years as well. She’s so grateful for the amazing cast & her outstanding double Stacey Drew. Being apart of the Drama Program has been the highlight of her high-school career she’s so grateful for the love & support and hopes it continues after high school as she pursues a career in musical theater.

Jessica Mae Rosa - Ensemble/ Dancing Fish/ Lilly-pad This will be Jessica's 5th production at Long Beach Poly High School (ATN, Shrek Jr., Chicago Jr., Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind, and The Little Mermaid). Her most memorable roles include the White Rabbit, a mistress, and a dancing fish. Thanks to my best friends!

Marielle Russell

Marielle Russell - Dancing Fish, H2O, Tapping Seagull This will be Marielle Russell's 17th theatrical production with Poly. As a senior in the PARTS pathway, Mimi has been in theatre and the Play Production class all 4 years and was previously one of the acting Drama Club Presidents along with Shila Regalado. She currently serves as vice president of Stage Crew Club. Her previous role, Fantine in Ghostlight was her first and final lead with Poly. Whether it be acting on stage, technical directing, running crew, set design, or graphic design, Marielle always has a part in the theatre department's productions. Alongside theatre, Mimi is involved in the school's jazz 2 vocal ensemble, stage crew, marching unit, and winter guard, where her talents truly get to shine! Thank you to the teachers and friends that made this production worthwhile. A special thank you to Charlie.

He’s been a 3-year Polyesters varsity member, The Little Mermaid will be his Second Musial performance after playing Shylocke in last year’s Something Rotten. He was also apart of plays like ‘Ghostlight’ and ‘I don’t want to Talk about it’ as well. Even with a smaller role this year, Jason hopes to make a presence on the stage regardless!

Nico Schuler - Jettsam This will be Nico's second poly drama show, but he has done many at other companies. He has been King Arthur in Spamalot, the Genie in Aladdin, the White Rabbit from alice in wonderland and many others. Outside of theatre he loves tech crew, sketching, band and orchestra. Alanna (Lanna) Smith

Alanna (Lanna) Smith - Ariel Alanna Smith is a talented senior at Long Beach Poly High School, known for her powerful voice and captivating stage presence. Born in California, she moved away at two years old to Atlanta, BUT she is back! Alanna joined the Jackrabbits community in August 2023, bringing her years of experience in musical theater. She is no stranger to the spotlight. At just three years old, her parents recognized something special in her and enrolled her in multiple performing arts camps. This early exposure helped her hone her craft, eventually leading her to train at the renowned Horizonal Theatre in Atlanta, where she further developed her skills in dance and performance. Alanna’s theatrical journey began at a young age. In 4th grade, she landed the role of Rafiki in The Lion King, followed by portraying Ariel in The Little Mermaid in 5th grade. She continued to shine in various productions, including Simone in Madeline’s Christmas and the Black Matter touring play, which explored powerful social themes. As a high schooler, Alanna’s passion for theater only grew. She starred in Mamma Mia as ensemble, Portia in Something Rotten at Poly, and returned to the role of Ariel for her senior year production of The Little Mermaid -full circle from her first performance as the beloved Disney princess in 5th grade. Alanna's return to Ariel in her final year is a testament to her growth as both an artist and an individual, with her deep connection to the character now reflecting years of experience and personal growth. Zander Smith

Zander Smith is a sophomore in the Poly Arts pathway. He has performed with LB Poly Drama in the 2024 production of Something Rotten, starring in one of the six plays of Poly Production, and is currently in Polyesters. He is also in Orchestra and the Poly Marching Unit. He looks forward to participating in future Lb Poly Drama performances. Zander would like to give his thanks to his mom and dad for supporting him throughout his acting endeavors.

Nwijuan Is a Senior at Long Beach Poly in the Beach pathway. has been Nwijuan an active jackrabbit all 4 years. With 3 sports under Niwjuan’s belt he has 2 years of experience in track and lacrosse and 4 years of football. In previous Poly productions you may have seen Nwijuan in debut play "Too much light makes the baby go blind". Nwijuan is excited to debut in his first poly musical "The Little Mermaid" he is cast as Sailor/ Chef.

Don Tran - Sailor/Frog/Chef/Band Member Don Tran is making his theater debut here. With a love for the stage he's had nearly nine years of choral experience and is a proud part of Polytechnic's Chamber Choir, Vocal Jazz I, and various Vietnamese dance groups. Westyn Ava has been an active member of the Poly Productions , with roles in "Legend of Mt. Hurr", “Too much Light makes the baby go blind and "The fault fault in our knives ", as well as performing with the improv team. Zion Traylor - H2O/Gull/Fish Zion Traylor is a junior in the Poly Arts program. She has been acting on and off stage sense she was 5 years old. She has been in many drama productions such as Something Rotten, Play productions, and our fall play Ghostlight. She is also currently co-captain of the Polyeters improv team. Chloe Williams - Sparkly Fish, Turtle and Princess Chloe Williams plays a Sparkly Fish, Turtle and Princess. She is a Senior in the Parts pathway and is apart of Play production in drama. Chloe is also the Playwright and Director of "The Neighborly Nuisance”, but she’s usually the one on stage and has been in several plays during her high school career. Carley in “I Don’t want to talk about it”, Grace in “Revelation for the Lamb”, 70’s Girl in “True Rock”, Young Hallie in “Enough”, Officer Fuller in “Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery”, Cult member in "The Legend of Mt. Hurr", and in last year’s musical "Something Rotten" as a Renaissance girl and Hippie, she was also recently Riley in “Ghostlight”. She is a part of 3 clubs here at Poly, Treasurer for Poetry club, and Member of both Build your Resume and Drama club. Chloe enjoys music, theater, cooking, writing for screen and poems, movies/shows, and fashion. She’d like to thank and give her love to her friends and family for always supporting her dreams.

Mia Winkler - Mersister and ensemble Mia Winkler is a sophomore here at Poly! She loves music and traveling. Mia participates in Poly’s vocal jazz choir, clubs including EIC (Equity Inclusion & Change), and Model UN. Mia debuted in last year’s “Something Rotten” and since then has fallen in love with the entire process of musical production. In this years musical, she is one of Ariel’s 6 sisters, Arista. She hopes to continue and explore this growing passion for musicals by participating in more Poly Productions!

Elizabeth Zabukovec - Mersister (Alanna), Princess, Dragonfly, Puppet Elizabeth is a senior in PACE, 3 year Varsity Waterpolo player, 2 year Varsity swimmer, and Soprano Section leader in the choral program. She aspires to major in nursing and become an RN to care for those in need.

Mariah Draquez

Mariah Draquez - Sebastian Mariah, is a freshman PACE student, on the Poly girls basketball team, a polyester, and plays the violin and base. Even though this is her first high school play, she has been in Alice In Wonderland, The Lion King with MyArt Studios in Middle School, and does vocal coaching with Musical Theatre West. She is passionate about the Arts and can not wait to continue with this journey.

Kim Arnett

Choreographer
Kim Arnett is so excited to be working with the students and staff at Poly! She played Aquata and understudied Ursula on the tour of Little Mermaid. She also set the choreography in Philadelphia last year for Walnut Street Theatre’s production of Beauty and the Beast. As a performer she was in Cathy Rigby’s Peter Pan on Broadway and the National tour, the original dance captain for Mamma Mia! in Las Vegas, and toured Europe with My Fair Lady and 42nd Street. She has been a part of over 50 productions during her career across the US. When she is not performing she teaches at Orange County Song & Dance and works with the wardrobe department for McCoy/Rigby Entertainment at La Mirada Theatre.

Linda Bon

Director/Producer
Linda Bon received her BA from BYU in Theatre Arts, her MFA from UCSD in Acting. and her Teaching Credential from CSULB. She has acted professionally in commercial work, film, and regional theatre, including “A Noise Within”, La Jolla Playhouse and National Theatre of London. She has taught Acting and Speech at the La Jolla Playhouse, Tracy Roberts Studio, and UCSD. She co-directs annually the Whitney Performing Arts Camp. She is married to a television editor, is the proud mother of four kids and two dogs, and has the best job in the world at Poly.

Brian Dokko

Music Director
Mr. Dokko has been the Director of Choral Activities at Poly HS since 2003. A graduate of UCLA with a degree in Music Education, Mr. Dokko also holds an M.M. in Choral Conducting from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSULB.

Mika Dyo

Mika Dyo is a professional costume technician and proud Poly Alum. Other costume design and construction credits include Electricidad, Dry Land, Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play, and Urinetown. They are honored to be a part bringing this production of The Little Mermaid to life and are so proud of the hard work everyone has put in.

Victoria Gathe-Rosado

Mrs. Gathe-Rosado makes dreams come true at Poly! She was raised in the Long Beach District backstage and in scene shops, as both her mother and father were Technical Directors before her. She has also worked in professional theatres across the country and brings to Poly a wealth of expertise to share! She runs the musical as well as shows for Choir, Band, Orchestra, Dance, and other Auditorium events. She teaches Stage Technology at Poly.

Liz Lozada

Liz Lozada was proudly born and raised in Southeast LA and received a Dual Master’s degree from NYU for Educational Theatre and English Education. She has acted on stage, written, directed, and produced plays, and is currently living the dream at Poly, working with youth in theatre. In her free time, she enjoys writing, yoga, nature, hanging with loved ones, dancing, and being a dog mom.

Sebastian Villar: "It has been an honor to artistically collaborate with the students and faculty at Poly High School. Alejandra Uribe

Alejandra is the Stage Crew President and a jack of all trades. This will be Alejandra's third musical production in the Andrew Osman Auditorium. Ale first started as Follow Spot Op #1 in 2023 for Chicago. She then moved up as the Head Flyman for Something Rotten in 2024. And finally, Alejandra is Stage Managing this year's musical production of The Little Mermaid! Howard Ashman

Download Photo Best known as a pivotal creative mind behind the renaissance of Disney animation and his work on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast (which is dedicated to, "Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul...") Ashman's first love was theater. Ashman was a founder of off off Broadway's renowned WPA Theater, where he conceived, wrote and directed God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, as well as the classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors (both music by Alan Menken). In 1986, he wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980's theater scene, Smile remains popular on High School and College campuses throughout the country. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS.
