Director's Note

"To the world we dream about, and the one we live in now..."

I keep coming back to this line in the show, and the fact that Orpheus' toast is to both the world of our future AND the world of right now. Both. When I think about the chasm between the world we dream about and the one we live in now, I feel overwhelmed. How do we get there from here?

If you are reading this hoping that I have answers to that question, stop reading now. I have no idea. But I think it has something to do with generosity, creativity, abundance, and connections (told you I don't have any answers!).

I am lucky to be surrounded by generosity and abundance. I don't always feel it or appreciate it, but working with these students: it's right there. I want to thank the cast and company of this production for GIVING so much. So much of their time and hard work, but mostly giving of themselves. For artists, the work is puting what's inside on the outside, and that is terrifying. So thank you for being courageous and fighting for your show.

I am thankful for such a generous team of artists to work with. Thank you Bennett, David, Brandon, Sierra, and Savannah for all you have given to these students and this show. A huge thank you to Avery and Kari, who got me through this. I cannot do it without you two. For my parents, my children, and my wife, Melanie: you are the world I live in now AND the world I dream about. Both.

"Life is a feast, but everywhere people are starving." This saying is meant to be figurative, but recent events have made it far more literal than anyone wants to look at. Please help support Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and other glabal and local organizations supporting the most vulnerable in our community. Donate to the Food Bank, and local businesses that are supporting furloughed federal workers, SNAP recipients, and others struggling in their own Hadestowns. Be generous of spirit and stuff.

This show is about light and shadow, love and fear, up above and down below. Find light and warmth in a cold world, and then share it. Remember that all that you give, you also give to yourself.

I learned that from a friend of mine...

Costumer Snippets

So. Hadestown!

We had seen a few productions of this show—including the traveling Broadway version and a few high school and community theatre efforts. But of course the costume crew wanted to help build this wonderful show by finding our own path.

As directors, we pondered where this story might take place, in what time period—and how to visually present these unique gods and humans.

We finally stopped thinking so hard and everything seemed to evolve and move (again and again) into a kind of timeless direction.

Our three sassy Fates became Very Fancy (no old, grey ladies these!)-looking as though they might have stepped from the 1930’s….but then again, those boots? Not quite the same era.

Persephone’s dresses may resemble styles from the 1950’s, but upon closer look, there might be hints of a few different decades.

Hermes wears an interesting three-piece pinstripe suit—which is mostly classic. But wait…is that a corset she’s wearing?

Hades descends wearing a 40’s fedora and several shades and textures of black and burgundy. He also wears a Japanese print topcoat with a subtle ridged spine down the back. What?

Orpheus and Eurydice are in shabby mismatched pieces from several eras, the workers are in various dark working clothes—-and it all sounds confusing, right?

Yet we like how it all seems to work together in odd and interesting ways.

With fewer cast members this time, the costumers were able to spend more time on some entertaining details—such as hat design, embroidery, beadwork and jewelry making. Willow constructed the suit for Hermes and various pieces of jewelry. Leyton shared fascinating tidbits about mythology, while designing and embroidering the back of Hades vest. Alivia hand-sewed appliqué to Persephone’s dress. Rory, AJ, and Alyssa worked on the Fates. Maisie and Regan worked on hair and makeup as well as the costumes. Landan coordinated the workers, and artistic Peregrine color-matched and painted shoes and boots.

Thank you for your all your hard work costumers! You are wonderful, brilliant, hilarious and brave!

Thank you also to amazing Lindsay Shipton, who is our hair/wig and makeup director/designer. Much gratitude to Bennett Stucky who pulls wonderful music from our students, Savannah, our brand new and talented technical director, Avery Rudman who calmly just does everything beautifully, and David Lonowski, vocal director. And of course my deep appreciation always to Joel Smith, my good friend and co-conspirator.

And lastly, such gratitude and love to my family and my Don. Thank you for graciously putting up with this passion of mine, my long hours, and my seemingly endless theatre chatter and student stories.
