Directors Note:
I'm Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire is a hilariously unhinged new play by Samantha Hurley that brings the era of mortifying 2000s attitudes out of that would-be forgotten abyss. Celebrity obsession has probably been around for as long as celebrities have existed. Teenage obsession can be the most intense. Shelby is so infatuated that she has kidnapped and chained Hollywood icon Tobey Maguire to a pole in her basement. Think Misery with a Y2K twist. As a director I became obsessed myself about when the play takes place? Yes, it was in 2004. (One scene out of the seven takes place a year earlier in 2003.) However, there are o many meta-moment, fourth wall shatterings, and asides to the audiences that it has become obvious to me that this is a memory play. The real Shelby is wickedly remembering what transpired 22 years ago. No, this is not like Tom's poignant memories in A Glass Menagerie. Not at all, but I became preoccupied about whether Shelby has survived after what happens in her life. Ever the optimist, I feel confident that Shelby is right where she needs to be taking on the world having grown from her experience with Tobey. The play is as crazed as it is heartfelt. We hope you enjoy Shelby's wild ride as much as we had creating it for you.
