Side-Coached is an improv show in which  performers improvise live based on an audience prompt, all along being lightly side coached by our experienced improv coach Ian Herrin.

In this first season we aim to experiment: at times one large team, at times two smaller teams, will perform in the first part of the show, then we will jam with audience members who put their names in the hat.

Our show is an offshoot of East Village Performance/Practice Group that started in Spring 2025. Our gratitude goes to Under St Marks Theater that fostered our group.

Meet the Company

Vermillion

Performer, producer
Vermillion is an independent performer, writer and artist born in Transylvania who has been active in the New York City cultural community since 2001. Her work has been presented at the Immigrant Theater Festival, Galapagos Art Space, Manhattan Theater Source, IWAS,The Field, Theater for the New City, The Moth, Stage Left, Bowery Poetry Club, and Chashama. For several years she focused on her visual art, exhibiting work at the Outsider Art Fair, showing in galleries, publicly buried herself in bottles during her residency on Governors Island, curating internationally The Mushroom Show in 2023 and the 2026 upcoming Coming Out Of Isolation in NYC and London. Her return to the theater has been a serendipitous process, with her current solo storytelling show, On Cats and Dogs and Other Family Revelations, successfully premiered at the 2024 NYC Fringe Festival. Its various iterations are monthly performed at Under St Marks Theater. As part of Under St Marks Theater revival of the vibrant improvisation programming that existed before Covid, Vermillion will perform in the monthly Side-Coached show, an offshoot of improv East Village Performance Group. Vermillion is honored to be the new resident of this OBIE award winning theater, and she will give her all "boot camp" style and hopefully manifest another OBIE! During the first part of her residency, she will develop an evening of inventive monologues, some soulful, some naughty, under the working title Book Spines Broken By My Purring Cat. As an improviser she is a graduate of UCB. Her good luck charm team is named Lovely Shoes.

Amy Jans

Performer
Amy Jans is a Brooklyn-based actor, writer, and voiceover artist with a specialty in quirky, surreal, and darkly funny characters. A graduate of UCB and the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, Amy creates comedy that feels like a fever dream, but somehow relatable. Her work spans scripted TV, animation, podcasting (Good Afternoon, Planet Earth), and her own whimsical brand, Dream Nudge.

Ian Herrin

Side coach
Ian Herrin is an actor, improviser, and teacher with over a decade of long form experience who has performed at PIT, Magnet, UCB, and festivals all over the East Coast. Ian is the host of the long running improv show The Ian Herrin Improv Hour (IHIH) which has featured Special Guests from Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Comedy Central, Logo TV, E! Network, TLC, VH1, IFC, truTV, et al. But let’s face it, you really know Ian from that one Selena Gomez commercial he did years ago or from his podcast appearances on Kame House Party, Sigmund Fraud, Yes, Also, and more! Ian now teaches at the UCB and passionately cares about making scenework even more accessible to improv students of all backgrounds. He simply can't wait for you to be included in what would normally be a behind closed doors intimate improv experience at Side-Coached in the historic Under St. Marks Theater.

Evan Maxwell
