PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTE
Thoughts from Tosin Morohunfola, Playwright and Director
In life, we all hide in various closets. Some closets store secrets we are too ashamed to face - some hold identities we are taught can never be explored - and sometimes, we are stuck in a closet of our own self-denial. Other times, a closet can hold hidden histories that we don’t even know define us. No matter what our closets hide, we all have things about ourselves we don’t share with the world: a product of social conditioning. This story starts with drums kept in the closet… but there’s so much more inside. It’s full of secrets, fears, beliefs, values, harms, behaviors and deep desires.
I don’t think it’s bad to have a closet, but it is up to us to choose if we’ll live inside it or come out of it - because some closets keep you safe and some suppress your identity.
As one of the few Black students and even fewer immigrants at my Johnson County high school, I remember all too well how much my brothers and I were outsiders. That experience inspired me to share parts of my past and the closets we all stayed inside to fit in, to be safe, and to give ourselves time to observe the world around us.
In The Drum Closet, we explore an ensemble of high schoolers, each with their own closeted ambition, shame or motivation as they navigate stepping in and out of their own respective closets. While the play also explores obstacles of adolescence like attraction, friendship, bullying, harassment and the nature of musical competition, more than anything, it is a story about how young people find their identity and learn to be true to themselves.
The Drum Closet is also about family and honoring where you came from, especially as immigrants. It’s about the complicated ways in which your past—whether stored away or not –follows you and affects your life. It is about how one person’s shame can be another’s source of pride. It is about how your legacy pushes you forward into your future.
Ultimately, the play shows us that everyone lives in different circumstances, so your closet belongs to only you – and we all deserve to explore and display our identity on our own terms.

Meet the Company
Damarion Leonhart
Damarion Leonhart loved reenacting movies like "Shrek," "The Incredibles," and "Cars" as a kid. He started theatre his sophomore year of high school at the suggestion of his competitive speech teacher after he quit pursuing video game programming. His first show was CLUE and he's been in love with theatre ever since. While Damarian makes his Coterie mainstage debut in THE DRUM CLOSET, he was previously a part of The Coterie's Young Playwrights Roundtable from 2021-2022 and participated as an actor in the 2022 Young Playwrights Festival, memories he cherishes deeply. He also participated as an actor in The Coterie's Project Daylight in during the 2022/2023 Season. Damarion is beyond grateful to start his 2026 with such a personal show as THE DRUM CLOSET. He began his theatrical journey in 2019 with Sumner Academy's production of CLUE as Mr. Body. He has since played The White Rabbit in ALICE IN WONDERLAND with Alcott Arts Center, in the BLM ensemble in BLACK MAN, MO with Terr. Studios, and as the Steward in MURDER ON THE NILE with City Theatre of Independence. While attending Kansas City Kansas Community College he also performed as Reverend Chasuble in THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and as Bob Martindale in PERFECT ARRANGEMENT. Damarion has also assisted in the creation of several Kansas City Kansas Community College sets and performed in a number of original works by playwrights in the Kansas City area. Damarion would like to give the greatest of gratitude to Tosin Morohunfola for taking a chance on a "long retired" band student who still has a great love for rhythm and soul. Damarian is a graduate of Sumner Academy of Arts and Science and Kansas City Kansas Community College. Find out more about Damarian on Facebook @Damarion Leonhart and Instagram @slick.the.lionheart.

Tobi Omodehinde
Tobi Omodehinde has always loved the art of storytelling as a magical way to connect with other people and bridge the gaps in the world. She got into theatre because whether you're on stage or behind it every person involved in a production is an integral puzzle piece. She also feels that as an actor, she gets the gift of living in the story in a very tangible and personal way with the audience and even though the core of the story being told never changes, every day on stage is a beautiful and exciting new experience. Tobi is a Nigerian-American actress and emerging writer based in Los Angeles, CA. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, she moved to Lenexa, KS, at the age of 14. Her interest in acting peaked at the age of eight after she played the role of Young Mary in a Christmas play. She would go on to spend most of her days passionately reenacting scenes from every movie after watching them. Ever since, she has inhibited each role with emotional depth and clarity. Most recently, she starred as the lead in the short film "We Are Not Alone," which premiered at SXSW. Other notable works include "Below The Fold" and "They Wait in The Dark." Her theatre credits include a handful of original one act plays, including THE AMERICAN D.R.E.A.M., BEGINNINGS FROM AN END, ADOPTION OF GRIEF, and THE BABY DANCE. Tobi graduated from Kansas State University then studied acting at The Actor’s Training Studio in Kansas City and Identity School of Acting in Los Angeles. An actress proud to be a Nigerian Immigrant, Tobi loves to tell cross-cultural stories that are rooted in empathy and bring global awareness to our shared humanity. Find out more about Tobi on Facebook @Tobi Omodehinde and on Instagram @the.art.of.lola.
