Thank you so much for coming to Alpha. I'm happy to have you here.
Alpha was conceived and created at the Old Globe and USD Shiley Graduate Theatre Program as my MFA Thesis. I hold it very near to my heart as a piece that I used to channel my joys and frustrations. So from a human standpoint, I hope you will find the piece rings true. And I hope you will forgive any artistic liberties that I have taken in crafting the drama of the piece. I am by no means a musher. And while I did a great deal of research, I am aware that I must have inevitable shortcomings in describing a life that I have never led myself.
I wrote what I knew in the container of something far from me. Sometimes distance in what you need to understand yourself, I would think we can all agree.
Alpha is about asking for help. A task that I have never found easy. But in the spirit of the piece, I must acknowledge that I had a lot of help in bringing Alpha to life in this premiere production.
Thank you to my mom who has become de facto SM, and who kept believing in the piece and me (even when I wavered). Thank you to my friends who helped me run lines, who gave me encouraging pep talks, who came to my final dress, who offered technical notes, who took me to theatre that would inspire me, who offered me housing and rides, who donated to my cause when I wasn't sure how I would pay for rehearsal space or my costume or travel. And thank you to all of you, who have helped by sitting in this florescent room, not knowing what you're getting in to. Because all of you have enabled me to follow my dream by doing so. I really love acting. And I get to do that today, because I have an audience (you).
