BWW Stage Mag Dracula: A Horror Story - Renaissance Theatre Stage Mag

Based on Bram Stoker's Dracula

Director's Note

I’ve gone back and forth with my parents trying to remember what was the first vampire story I encountered as a kid. It could’ve been the age-appropriate “Bunnicula”, the 80’s classic “The Monster Squad”, or my mother’s childhood favorite “Dark Shadows”. But it doesn’t matter, because what they all have in common is “Dracula”. Whether featuring the character or being directly inspired by it, the classic vampire story has weaved its way into pop culture and society in a way I’m sure Bram Stoker never thought possible.

Adapted for the screen and stage hundreds of times, it’s difficult to find a “fresh take”. But I would argue that just by continuing to tell the story over these past 130 years, it keeps it fresh and alive. The story takes new meaning with each generation. Fear of demonic forces, sexual anxieties, and a greater distrust of the “unknown” or “other” have kept this story relevant no matter who is interpreting it.

We hope that you enjoy this interpretation. This cast has done beautiful work focusing on fear and the psychological effects of these terrible events. We are daring you to walk in their shoes and ask yourself “what would I do?”… if you woke one night to find Dracula at your window. Would you invite him in?
