Director's Note:

The intimate community of Gee's Bend, Alabama, boasts an extraordinary history. It was initially established in 1816 by the North Carolinian enslaver Joseph Gee and the 17 enslaved African Americans he brought to clear the land and cultivate cotton. In 1845, Mark H. Pettway, a relative of Gee, acquired the debt-ridden land, relocated to Gee's Bend, and transported his family and furnishings in a wagon train. Concurrently, 100 enslaved men, women, and children were compelled to embark on a foot journey from North Carolina to their new life in Alabama. Following emancipation, numerous freed families retained the Pettway surname, acquired land, and constructed homes. This isolated community fostered unique traditions and the improvisational quilting technique.

For generations, the women of Gee's Bend have been crafting patchwork quilts by assembling scraps of fabric and clothing into abstract designs that had never been expressed on quilts before. Their patterns and piecing styles have been passed down through generations, enduring slavery and Jim Crow. Infused with a visual imagination that extends the expressive boundaries of the quilt genre, these remarkable creations have expanded the realm of Black visual culture and provided new insights into American art and history.

This play narrates the coming-of-age story of Sadie Pettway, based on the real-life Gee's Bend quilter Mary Lee Bendolph. It chronicles the journeys of Sadie, her sister Nella, their mother Alice, and Sadie's daughter Asia from 1939 to 2002. From the Great Depression era through the Civil Rights Movement, Sadie's journey blossoms with familial love, self-discovery, and artistic expression.

She has taught at the Evanston Art Center for over 15 years and runs her own art school, Studio 215, at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center in Evanston, IL. She’s also the director of The Grove Gallery, located in downtown Evanston. She went on to get an MA in Art History in 2005. Ever since, she has been exploring and pushing the boundaries of painting in her work. She enjoys building community and supporting the arts in every way possible.

Sholo Beverly

Scenic Painter

a mixed media intuitive artist living on the northside of Chicago. She is a 53-year-old single mother of two that has always only prioritized her children and her art for the last twenty years. She has learned embracing her mistakes makes for a better understanding of what the universe wants for her art. Her activism to right the injustices against people of color has caused her art to evolve. She is also taking her art to the streets to advocate for social changes on racism, and women's rights with the murals, painted in bright colors with hidden messages to observe and process. The mediums and techniques used are homemade inks, collage, watercolor, and the new medium of encaustic wax painting with acrylic inks. With our current situation in the world, her art has become a necessity for herself and others. There is a need for expression and discussion from POC. She is not concerned with her artwork being liked by society, but she does want her work to spark an emotion to the viewer to ask the question of why when they see her art. "I Am Aware I Am Rare" is her motto, embracing being a female black artist without boundaries for expression in her creations.
