Director's Note
It's amazing how a work of theatre from 20 years ago (the first production was done in Germany in 2006) still resonates. It's also quite remarkable that the play has been performed in numerous countries and languages and still it works regardless. It's not rooted in the United States, England or France (the home of author Yasmina Reza). It's also not rooted in culture (Reza is French, Persian and Jewish). Rather it's rooted in truth: the truth that when humans are pushed and prodded and manipulated enough, we will unfortunately resort to our basest, animalistic natures. At least that's the warning I think Reza wants to make. And unfortunately, over the last 20 years we've seen this play out far too often. We've set this play on November 4th, 2008 -- a date that should be meaningful to all of us. It was the date that Barack Obama was elected president -- a day that marked a shift in this country to what we could be in our most hopeful sense. But it also marked the date that we truly, as a country, began to divide and identify with those divisions. I can only hope that this play, in addition to being entertaining and funny, can also be a meaningful reminder that we do have the capacity to be better and that there is still hope.
