Artistic Director's Note
Message from the Artistic Director
There are a handful of “special shows” in musical theatre, and Into the Woods is one of them. It transforms the fairy-tale figures we think we know, using stories passed down through generations to explore deeply adult truths.
At its core, Into the Woods is a fantasy about reality—about the stories, desires, and behaviors we inherit. Act I reveals the lengths we go to in pursuit of our wishes; Act II asks us to confront the consequences of those desires. How do these characters disrupt the natural order to get what they want - and what must they sacrifice to restore balance?
At Mainstage Theatre Company, we value community, and this story reminds us why. When faced with forces too large to overcome alone, it is only through collective responsibility and action that resolution becomes possible.
As the adults leading this next generation the world’s leaders, we must be mindful of the stories we pass on to the next generation, because children will listen. Our wishes, like our children, have the power to shape not only our own lives but the lives of others. When fueled by fear, pride, or deceit, those wishes can grow beyond our control. And perhaps the most dangerous mistake of all is the belief that we are alone.
Enjoy our journey into the woods and may we return more wiser and mindful that our actions have consequences.
