Welcome to Venice!
(Everyone wears masks)
We’re so pleased that you’ve come to Venice: the best, most sophisticated, most enlightened city in the whole entire world! Ignore the rumors; we actually love foreigners (and not just because they’re good cannon fodder). After all, if we didn’t have foreigners, then how would we be able to demonstrate how uniquely progressive and tolerant we are? It’s just that our first duty is to protect the social order, so we have to take steps to make sure no one ever mistakes them for real Venetians. Don’t worry, they don’t mind at all. They’re just grateful to be here. Anyway, we’re the best city in the world, remember? That automatically means we’re handling everything right. Obviously. Our detractors are just jealous. (They should really work on that. Jealousy is very unhealthy.)
You might also have heard that we’re all game-players—but what’s so bad about that? Games are based on rules, and rules are what keep everyone safe. Naturally, we can take it for granted that we’re all playing the same game and that no one would ever cheat—so what’s the problem? Well? Well? Oh, that’s right: there isn’t one. We’re glad you’re catching on.
Speaking of rules: our political system is doing just fine, thank you very much. You don’t have to say “red tape” like it’s a bad thing. What’s so impressive about reacting in the moment, anyway? That’s what animals do. No, we take our time. We think things through. We lay our plans—and they always work. We’ve optimized everything to be 100% rational and corruption-proof. And no, we will not be taking follow-up questions such as “but what if there’s an emergency?”; we don’t have emergencies. Which part of the “best city in the world” concept was unclear? Nothing bad could ever happen here. Shhh. Shhh. Stop worrying. Go and look at a canal or something. Everything is under control.
