A Guide to Court Gossip
Welcome to the court of King Edward IV! During your stay, you may hear some scandalous rumors. So, let’s set the record straight in advance.
Yes, it’s true about Elizabeth Woodville. Or, as we all apparently have to call her now, “the queen.” She was once married to an enemy soldier, Edward did jilt a French princess for her, and she has cluttered up the whole palace with her déclassé family. And no, she didn’t hold Edward’s attention for very long.
And yes, fine, it was Richard, Edward’s youngest brother, who murdered the last king, Henry VI, three months ago. Is that really so terrible? Henry will be much happier in heaven. And if he hadn’t died, then Edward couldn’t have become king. Look, sometimes you have to take desperate measures for your family’s sake, alright? Just ask Clarence, the middle brother, about what he did for Edward during the war. (Speaking of people who would do anything for Edward—actually, never mind. You can draw your own conclusions about Lord Hastings. Who, by the way, is in prison right now—can you believe it? The queen’s brother can get Edward to sign pretty much anything these days…)
Should you hear any seditious whispers about Henry Tudor, the exiled young Earl of Richmond, pay no attention. Admittedly, his stepfather, Lord Stanley, has been seeming less-than-enthused with the current régime—but what’s the worst that could happen? Richmond is all the way in Brittany; obviously, he’s not about to somehow get an army together and show up here! His claim to the crown barely even counts. And he’d never get the chance to be king anyway; we have plenty of better heirs right here at home. Edward won’t live forever (actually, Edward might not even make it to next week; that’s what happens when you try to party away all your wartime trauma). But, luckily, he and the queen managed to produce two sons and a daughter. And (purely as a thought experiment, you understand) if there turned out to be some reason they couldn’t inherit the crown, then Clarence would be right there. And (bear with us here; this is still fully hypothetical) if something were to very tragically happen to Clarence, then—well, poor lonely heartbroken Richard would just have to become king, wouldn’t he? It would be his duty. And he always tries to do the right thing.
(Don’t worry. This is all completely unbiased. You can trust us.)
