A Note From Sean

When Spencer first reached out to me about putting together a solo show, I chuckled and told him that it would be wayyyyy too self indulgent.  And the more I thought about it, the more it settled into questions… What would I want to sing? Who would I want to sing with? Would anyone want to come? 

As I mulled over these queries, I started to see what I imagined a “solo” show might look like. I'm an unapologetic extrovert. I love sharing time, energy, space, coffee, and time with others. Why would this show be any different? So who do I want to sing with and what would we sing?! A list of about 50 people came to mind. What a gift. So I chose a few very important people on that list and began plotting a plot that was so plotting, it would plot itself into reality. So what do we call this solo/people I love show? Who I’d Be. The act one finale from Shrek. And who would I be without people like this in my life? Who would I be without sharing my life with Marissa? Or my friends? Or other incredible musicians and performers that inspire me to look higher and work harder? I am my best self because of the people I've been able to share life with. So who would I be? The song focuses on Shrek’s ideal future. He'd be a poet, a viking, something that he isn't. But as we see from the conclusion of the show, his “perfect happy ending” comes with him being himself. No hiding. No shame. No apologies. Just him. Just Shrek! When you find people that love you for you in spite of your flaws, that's a perfect happy ending. So…

Spencer. Thank you for pushing me to do this. Thank you for helping me not do an entire show of ballads because we all know that was the first version of this. Thank you for your candor, your friendship, and late night texts about some random theatre thing. Thank you for giving me my first opportunity to sing at 54 Below and so many others afterwards. I'm beyond grateful for you as a collaborator and even more so as a friend. 

Kenneth. I've never met anyone so sassy, so classy, or so flashy. You have a spark that always energizes those around you. Your talent matches your wit and that's mighty impressive. Thank you for lifting me up and giving me opportunities. Thank you for playing some of this very hard music. Thank you for helping me think outside the box. I love you so much and I'm grateful for every moment. 

Michael. Where do I even begin? When I first heard you sing, I ascended. You have the most unbelievable gift and I cannot believe that I've gotten to share in that with you. From basement community theatre to college to New York to traveling around the nation to New York stages. I still look up to you. Your journey and commitment and hard work are a testament to who you are as a man. MY MAN! I'm in awe of you every day. Thank you for being an incredible friend, an inspiration, and a fellow Batman fanatic. Love you, bubbas! 

Delaney. It's wild to think that we've done so many little cabaret shows and never actually sung together. I'm blown away by your talent. You've done so much in such a short time and I'm just so excited to see what's on your horizons. You have magnetic energy! I knew I wanted to sing with you the minute I heard you. I can't believe you said yes, but I'm so glad you did!! To many more! 

Keara. You absolute legend. I love you as much as you love Harry Styles and we all know that's a LOT! I met you at a crossroads in my work life and I'm so glad I did. Our morning karaoke work sessions slinging coffee and singing Lawrence at 7 AM still mark some of my favorite memories at Joe. Thank you for your beautiful chaos. Every time I catch you at Manhattanville, my week gets better. I'm so glad you said yes to reprising our epic post-close duet! 

Morgan and Ben. Coco also thanks you for your service as Aunty and Uncle. Tell Val and George that Uncle Sean loves them. Thank you for being constant friends. Thank you for the football nights, being our award show buddies, and just being constant beacons of light in our life. You both are two of our most important Oklahomies. Love y'all! 

Ian. One of my first Gotta Sing friends.  I’m so grateful for that community.  You welcomed me in so graciously and I felt right at home.  Heard you ripping on that show and I knew I wanted to sing with you!  Turns out you’re also just the most lovely human being… Go figure.  Thanks for saying yes to this ridiculous idea and embracing the whimsy.  

Kat. The way I was absolutely gooped and gagged when I heard that voice… I'm still flabbergasted that I got to stand on the same stage as you. Somehow your joy radiates even brighter than your voice. You embody what it means to feel safe and supported. I felt like I knew you for years when I first met you. Your love of people, music, theatre, and life… it's infectious. Thank you for saying yes!! 

Ronan. The chilliest, sickest, smoothest, coolest bass player east of the Mississippi. You're one of the nicest, most relaxed people I've ever met and it's such a great departure from my chaos! Thank you for saying yes to some crazy asks in this show. Per usual, you're calm, cool, collected, and CRISPY! 

Andre. New friend, who dis?  When Spencer and I talked about adding a guitarist, he mentioned a friend that can really shred… and that was all the convincing I needed.  Watching you shred at Giselle’s solo show was the cherry on top.  These people are not ready to have their faces melted on these solos.  Thanks for joining the crew!

Marissa. MY WIFE! Thank you for calming me down when I overreact. Thank you for grounding me when I fly a little too high. You're the most important thing in my life. I can't imagine walking this walk without you. You bring me peace and joy in abundance. Wherever we go, whatever we do… we're gonna get through it together. I love you. 

My family! I'm not sure where I would be without your support. There's not a day that goes by where I don't take it for granted. My love of music stems from each of you. My love of people stems from each of you. You each displayed selfless love in so many ways.  How lucky am I? If I'm half the person each of you are, I'll consider that a win. 

Ben and Erica. Best agents I could've ever asked for. Needless to say, my journey would look quite different without you both at the helm. Through every yes, no, and almost, you've never wavered in your belief in me. That makes such a difference. Thank you for your support, your voice, your sweet messages, and ALLLL of the tapes and auditions! Love you both very much! 

Noah. Thank you for two insane arrangements in the shortest period of time. I know it was nothing compared to the Vulfpeck show, but still haha! You're a freaking WIZARD! Your brain is so big. It's nuts. I can't wait to see what is on your horizon. I'm glad to be in your orbit! 

Sheridan. Your gift is beyond me. I can barely sing and walk at the same time and you're back there doing witchcraft to make us sound and look good. Best hair in the city. Period. Also, your energy is so calming. In this space and in this industry, that means the world. I see you, I smile. Simple as that. I'm so grateful you were able to do this show. I adore you! 

Everyone else. Y'all, I could've sat here and kept writing about everyone that I think is gonna come lol. My Joe Coffee family, I love you. I'm so grateful to love where I work when I'm not doing theatre. My Joe Coffee Custies! Again, how lucky am I that my job entails coming in to make coffee for my friends and gab about life? Thank you for being a part of my every day. My theatre fam. I love you. I learn from you. I'm in awe of so many of you. EVERYONE! Thank you for being here. I hope it brings you a little joy. 

Meet the Company

Sean Steele

Born in good ole Corpus Christi, TX, Sean Steele came out of the womb loud as sin and only got louder from there. He’s known for his vocal versatility, easily able to float from Mozart to Sondheim to classic country and more. He’s completed multiple degrees and had quite a bit of training, but it all started singing oldies and folk songs with his family. Sean made his NYC debut in Kinky Boots as the big and burly Don. Working with Cyndi Lauper and Jerry Mitchell might be the biggest highlight of his career! Sean has also performed in a multitude of major regional houses over the years including Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, North Shore Music Theatre, Syracuse Stage, and more. Sean can often be found in New York City singing at The Greenroom 42, 54 Below, and other cabaret clubs. Sean currently tours with The 3 Redneck Tenors singing high notes and making very dumb jokes. When he's not doing all of that, he'll pour you a nice swan or tulip at his lil Joe Coffee. Sean was a long standing member of Windsong Chamber Choir and has worked as a featured soloist in Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light: A Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, among many others. None of this would be possible without Marissa, Coco, his family, or his oddball friends. Massive thanks to Ben and Erica at Headline Talent for their love and support.

Michael Andreaus

Keara Byron

Keara Byron is a singer, actor, and cat mom who graduated from Ithaca College with a BFA in Musical Theatre in 2019. Some of her professional credits include Leslie/Understudy for Dead Mum and Mrs. Wilkinson in Billy Elliot (Hangar Theatre), Dyanne Standby in Million Dollar Quartet (Cortland Repertory Theatre), Luisa in The Fantasticks (Cider Mill Playhouse). Ben Hardin

Ben Hardin is very excited to share the stage with Sean once again, having last done so in The Most Happy Fella at the University of Central Oklahoma, where he played the Doctor to Sean’s Tony. Past credits include Merrily We Roll Along (Franklin Shepard), Bonnie and Clyde (The Preacher), Grease (Roger) and Shrek the Musical (Shrek). Thank you to Sean and Spencer for the invitation and allowing me to ride on the coattails of their passion for the arts!

Ian Laudano

Ian is stoked to be the token New Jerseyan in a cabaret full off far more respectable adults! Previous Sean Steele credits include: Gotta Sing! (Original Cast), Gotta Sing! Christmas, Great Big Stuff! A Tribute to David Yazbeck. Love to Sean, Spencer, Kenneth, and the sound team at Green Room for making him seem more talented than he is!

Kat Rodriguez

Kat Rodriguez (she/her) is honored to be joining her BFG (Big Friendly Giant) Sean to make some beautiful music together again. Kat is a multihyphenate artist, identifying as a vocalist, musician, writer, and amateur crocheter. Most recently, she has been seen around the country as part of the Wicked National Tour (Shen Shen, u/s Madame Morrible) or as Joanne in Rent at North Shore Music Theater. HUGE shoutout to Sean for giving her joy on the reg, the whole artistic team for putting this beautiful night together, and her wonderful moms for continuing to believe in and support her dreams.

Morgan Rothwell

Morgan Rothwell (she/her) is pumped to share the stage with Sean again after seven years! Past credits include Sandy in Grease, Eliza US/Ensemble in My Fair Lady (Broadway Tonight with Tony Walton), and Shellie in Catch Me If You Can (TENT Theater). She was most recently seen collaborating with creative.nyc, performing a number from the off-Broadway show Ecclesiastes. A big special thank you for Sean and the team that puts this whole evening together, with a special shout out to her life long partner in life and stage, Ben.

Kenneth Gartman

Music Director

Kenneth Gartman is a New York City based Singer, Pianist, Vocal Coach, Music Director, Director and Producer. As an actor and singer Gartman toured with the Broadway national tour of “The Music Man”, internationally on the Live BBC Broadcast of “Simply Sondheim”, and throughout Ireland in “A New York Songbook: Way Off Broadway”. He released his debut solo album “We Need a Little Christmas” in 2020. Andre Wakkerman

Guitar

Andre Wakkerman is a New York City musician, songwriter, and educator. A founding member of The Third Rails, he performs throughout the city as a singer, guitarist, and pianist. He also teaches piano, guitar, drums, and music theory through his private studio. Andre is grateful for the opportunity to share his love of music both on stage and in the classroom.

Ronan McKinnon

Bass

Ronan McKinnon is a versatile and vibrant freelance bass player in the NYC area. He is known for appearing anywhere where great music is being played regardless of the style or genre and has been seen playing both electric and upright bass in many esteemed venues such as The Town Hall, The Rose Theater, Times Square, New York City Center, and Alice Tully Hall. Ronan McKinnon has made music alongside a number of musical giants such as Bill Frisell, The Clark Sisters, Salieu Suso, Sandbox Percussion, Bobby Sanabria, George Lewis, Doyeon Kim, Wyclef Jean and Jason Mraz. Additionally Ronan McKinnon frequently engages in multidisciplinary art, in 2023 he was the principal bass of the Mannes Opera’s production of The Magic Flute and in 2024 he was in the orchestra for The Martha Graham Dance Company’s production of Rite of Spring as well as numerous off broadway productions and occasional collaborations with the NYC civil rights focused orchestra, Protestra.

Spencer Sher

Producer/Drums

Spencer Sher is a Theatrical Producer, Arts Administrator, and Drummer. He made his 54 Below producing debut in July 2024 with 54 Sings Vulfpeck and his Green Room 42 producing debut in January 2025 with Fake Bands/Real Songs. He is the Creator and Producer of the podcast, “And the EGOT Goes To…”, of which he hosts the Tony Awards episodes and the Co-Host and Broadway Reviewer for the international Musical Theatre podcast, “Thrash n’ Treasure”. Keep an eye out this year for his new concert series, “In Their Own Words” which uses interviews given by composers throughout their careers to add context to their library of work, premiering on December 7 with The Songs of Jason Robert Brown. He is currently in his "force his friends to do solo shows" era, in which he has successfully convinced four of his friends to let him conceive and produce solo shows for them. He is having the absolute time of his life getting to work with his friends and he can't wait for everyone to finally see what Sean has been working on.

A Note From Spencer

I first got acquainted with Sean when I saw him in the off-broadway revival of Kinky Boots, and I’ve been obsessed with his voice ever since. I’ve known Sean since December 4 2023 when I reached out to him about being a part of my NYC producing debut, “54 Sings Vulfpeck”. Since then, he is the only performer who’s been in every single one of my shows, but more importantly, he has become one of my closest friends. I can’t believe I’ve been so lucky to have Sean in my life, and I’m so glad that he finally said yes to doing a solo show. I’m incredibly proud of what we’re putting onstage this afternoon, and I can’t wait to keep working with Sean for the rest of our lives.

I also want to give a shout out to my frequent collaborator Noah Turner, who put together two medleys for this afternoon. He managed to put all of Shrek the musical in a fifteen minute medley and I’m so lucky that he didn’t think we were crazy when we came to him with the idea.

Join Delaney, from the first national tour of Jagged Little Pill as she tells the tragic tale of a bright eyed, bushy tailed actress ready to take New York City by storm in her solo show Too Tall for the Bubble. At her core she knew she was a Glinda, but was relentlessly shoved into the Elphaba box by this business- all because of her height.. and phenomenal belt. How awful. Not only did this change the trajectory of her career but also affected the inner workings of her personal and romantic life as well? Maybe we won’t get into that. Maybe we will? Featuring songs from Wicked, Jagged Little Pill, Diana the Musical and more. Featuring special guests Liesie Kelly (The Lost Boys), Jade McLeod (Jagged Little Pill), Sabrina Santana (Into the Woods), Lana Schwartz and Ayden Weinstein. 

I’m incredibly excited to be working on a solo show with my friend, Sara Al-Bazali on October 4. 

Sara Al-Bazali, current standby Veronica and Heather Chandler in Heathers off-broadway makes her 54 Below solo debut in Wait for It. Featuring music from Wicked, Hamilton, and new arrangements of some of her favorites, the show is a journey through the music that has shaped her life and career. Join Isabella Esler, current star of Heathers off-broadway, and Lydia in Beetlejuice on Broadway and Giselle Gutierrez, star of the first national tour of Mrs. Doubtfire in their new duo cabaret, Lydia Squared on October 16 at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. The two met while they both discovered that they would be on tour at the same time, playing different Lydias, in Mrs. Doubtfire and Beetlejuice. Join them for a night of fun, competition, and stories as the two friends sing some of their favorite duets while reminiscing about the difficulty of playing characters named Lydia. My new concert series, In Their Own Words is premiering on December 7 at the Green Room 42. The series uses previous interviews to add context to a single composer's catalog.
