A LETTER FROM THE MANAGING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to the world premiere of A Swinging Christmas: The Holiday Music of Tony Bennett! We are so excited to keep our 15th anniversary season celebration going with this special production that features the music of legendary American music icon, Tony Bennett.

For this monumental show, we have assembled a tremendous group of artists to make sure everything looks and sounds amazing. And on top of that, we are collaborating with the creators of the show to bring it to vivid life. World premieres are rare and you are a part of one. How cool is that? And although it’s cold outside, it is warm in here. In fact, we want you to feel that warmth in so many ways: our coffee and cocktails will literally warm you up, and then let our show warm your heart and soul and put a smile on your face. We hope that you truly feel like part of the Farmers Alley family. Our hearts are warm because we are grateful to have such loyal, supportive, and generous patrons like you.

The theatrical exhilaration will continue in 2023 with two new plays on our main stage, a concert in collaboration with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and then, the entire town is buzzing with excitement about our summer production of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical RENT.  We do this for you so thanks for being here and please continue to join us for the warmth. Join us for the excitement. Join us for the magic of live theatre…together.

Jeremy Koch — Managing Artistic Director

DIRECTORS NOTE

Welcome to the world premiere of A Swinging Christmas: The Holiday Music of Tony Bennett! Tonight, we are proud to celebrate the legendary Tony Bennett through the music he loved, performed, and recorded for nearly eight decades.

Our primary goal in creating this musical was to immerse and entertain you through Bennett’s own words, often taken directly from his autobiographies/interviews and then layering that information on top of the remarkable variety of music he sang, touched and influenced. Our ultimate goal was to create a holiday themed musical that would take our audiences deeper into the “essence” of Tony Bennett the man, the singer, and the creative artist, while never making a direct attempt to impersonate Bennett himself.

It is no secret that Tony loved the holidays and recording holiday music. His musical passion for singing jazz or swing music was always fueled further by performing with great artists such as the Count Basie Orchestra, Ella Fitzgerald, or Duke Ellington.

So, when Todd Olson and I pitched our new Bennett project to our musical arranger Vince di Mura, we asked specifically for two things. First, we needed a piano score that would swing hard. Second, we wanted to pay special tribute to Bennett’s love of jazz music in the vocal arrangements. I think you will agree that he delivered on both counts!

Finally, on a personal note, I want to express my sincere appreciation to everyone connected with Farmers Alley Theatre for allowing me the opportunity to return to my old theatrical stomping grounds of the 1980s to share this world premiere with Kalamazoo audiences. I have missed you and it is nice to be home again! Enjoy!

After over two years of so many challenges and losses, she feels so blessed to have this opportunity to sing these classics and celebrate the holidays by bringing a new show into the world of theater with some of her favorite theater people in the world. For Joe, Laurel, Dot, Jane, and Richard ❤️
