ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT
George Ayres is the co-founder of 4 Girls Film Productions and Oui Lounge Pictures. Most recently his short film THE DOORMAN (2022) was accepted into various festivals. He cowrote JUST AS YOU ARE and THE STORY for Austin Children’s Theatre. His one-act play FORTUNE COOKIE was produced at the Riant Theatre and at the American Theatre of Actors, both in New York. THE RIBBON BOX, a full-length, had a staged reading at the New Plays Festival in Austin, TX. His feature film, BIRD IN HAND, is currently in development.
While a former Austin, TX resident, he now resides in upstate New York with his wife Heatherly.
PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTE
DESTINATION, first performed in New York City in March and directed by the incomparable David Jarrott, proved that this story – based on details my dad recounted to me about one specific day – was ready to be told. However, developing this play as historical fiction gave me the liberty to imagine everything else that might have transpired.
Thanks to Jeff Steen, who knew my dad and believed in this story from the beginning; Kristen Lowman for her invaluable contributions to the rewriting of this play; and to Jarrott Productions for bringing DESTINATION to Austin.
In memory of my friend Joe Hayes (1959–2023), who directed the first reading of this play in 2017.
Here’s to living with no regrets, making connections with one another regardless of age, and to marriages and friendships – usually rewarding, sometimes difficult, and hopefully beautiful until the end.
Cast
Time & Place
The play takes place on a Spring day in the present, mostly in Howard’s 6th floor apartment in Highland Manor, an assisted living facility in Houston TX, but also at a coffee shop, a mall car rental agency, a truck stop, a hotel room, and on the front porch of a house in a small town down the road from Houston.
