About The Play

Meticulously researched in Sarajevo, and based on the events of 1914, ARCHDUKE is a play about the infamous assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife which history tells us was the match that lit the fuse that started World War I. 

All the male characters you’ll meet were in fact present for that event, although not necessarily as they appear in this play. A number of playwrights, Joseph among them have made twisting history important to the telling of a story such as this one. In the twisting comes surprising moments, especially for this playwright, of true comedic splendor or as the critic for the Los Angeles Times, Charles McNulty explained of the production at the Mark Taper Forum in 2017, it is a “style blending rambunctious humor with a global conscience and an empathy that heeds no borders.”

In a warehouse at midnight. “Gavrilo, a teenage boy, frail, underfed, and sickly enters” looking for “the man.” Not long after, he is joined by Nedeljko, also nineteen, also looking for “the man.” Gavrilo had been told “there’d be a guy who’d give me meaning in my life.” In Nedeljko’s case he thinks he is coming for a job. During the ensuing chaos, they find out that they are both lungers; they have tuberculosis/consumption/the Red and Yellow, and they were both sent to this warehouse by “the Doctor on the hill” who they were able to visit because he is “free.”

We come to learn that this Doctor is recruiting boys for Dragutin “Apis” Dimitrijevic of the Black Hand, a secret Serbian society that used terrorist methods to promote the liberation of Serbs outside Serbia. He needs these boys to assist him in his plot to assassinate the Archduke and his wife when they come to visit Sarajevo. As Gavrilo and Nedeljko’s frustration grows, we meet Trifko who can, and does, take them to “the man.”

Upon arriving at “the man’s” home, our young men enter a world of indescribable delights overseen by Apis along with his housekeeper and cook, and the one fictional character in this play, Sladjana. While the trio is scarfing down a massive spread of food, they are given a history lesson in Serbian grievances against the rule of the Austrian-Hungarian regime of Emperor Franz Joseph and his heir, the Archduke whom Apis explains is responsible for the boys’ fatal ailments. The answer of course is to become martyrs themselves. 

Apis adds to the boys list of delights when he lets them know they will be going to Sarajevo on a train, something none of them have ever experienced. Interrupting their unmitigated joy, Apis involves them all in performing a pantomime of the assassination. Apis plays the Archduke, and Sladjana plays his wife. Chairs become a car, calm becomes chaos, and how the three boys are perceived is upended.

Soon after they are on the train. What is going to happen becomes clearer. A new more philosophical look at life, and distance, and what is to come, overtakes them all as we are led to the inevitable events of June 28, 1914.

A gifted playwright with the uncanny ability of ringing humor out of some of the most difficult and dramatic situations, Rajiv Joseph was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio where he still shares family time while calling Brooklyn, New York home. In 1996, he graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with a degree in Creative Writing, but instead of pursuing another degree, he packed his bags and headed to the West African Republic of Senegal where he spent the next three years in the Peace Corps. In any number of interviews, he comments on the experience. “Being in Senegal, more than anything else in my life, made me into a writer.” 

When he returned, a friend “gave him the idea to attend grad school and study screenwriting.” Although he has written a few screenplays and a bit of television, we are very fortunate that the school he chose was New York University where “he found himself inspired by theatre for the first time.” Seeing the work of Stephen Adly Guirgis and Lynn Nottage, he decided “I want to do that.” Joseph earned his MFA in Dramatic Writing in 2004. His first play, HUCK AND HOLDEN, debuted at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 2006, followed in quick succession by ALL THIS INTIMACY also in 2006, THE LEOPARD AND THE FOX in 2007, and ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER in 2008. 

Enter BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO first presented at Los Angeles’ Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre in 2009, followed by a production at the Mark Taper Forum in 2010, and an auspicious Broadway debut in 2011, with Robin Williams heading the cast, and yours truly a fortunate audience member. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for this play. Awards and recognition have been following him ever since including two Obie Awards for Best New American Play, first in 2016 with GUARDS AT THE TAJ (presented at Capital Stage in 2017) and DESCRIBE THE NIGHT in 2022.

Joseph, like so many other playwrights, found himself caught in the pandemic chaos that has gripped the country for the past three years. As the pandemic began, he had been working on the libretto of a new musical, FLY at the La Jolla Playhouse. It opened and closed within a week in March of 2020. His play, KING JAMES, is currently on hold at the recently shuttered Mark Taper Forum.

Our play, ARCHDUKE, had a major production also at the Mark Taper Forum in 2017. The production led to a rewrite. TheatreWorks presented that rewrite in 2019. This current production at Capital Stage is of a script dated 2021. In a chat that same year with the original director of the play, Giovanna Sardelli, Joseph spoke of "reconsidering it yet again," as he feels a "newfound resonance in this time because it is about young men who are sick." Not surprisingly, rumor has it another rewrite might be on the way.

John was last seen at Capital Stage in MR. BURNS, A POST ELECTRIC PLAY and MAURITIUS. He is a member of the B Street Theatre acting company where he has performed in over 90 productions. Some of his favorites include THE WALWORTH FARCE, JACK GOES BOATING, THE EXPLORERS CLUB, AIRNESS, LOVERS AND EXECUTIONERS, and most recently THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG. He has also worked with the Sacramento Theatre Company in productions including PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, and KINGS OF AMERICA. John is the creator of SEEKERS OF THE STRANGE, a live role-playing game with audience participation that occurs monthly at B Street’s UPSTAIRS at the B venue.

Chris Sharpe is excited to be joining the Capitol Stage Family with ARCHDUKE, the Sacramento native actor has been previously seen as Sam Hendrix in WAIT UNTIL DARK, Gaston in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, Tommy in A DREAMER EXAMINES HIS PILLOW, and Officer Tierney in CLARA.

Cole Winslow

Cole Winslow is thrilled to be back at Capital Stage. He was a Capital Stage apprentice and appeared in the 2016/2017 season as Jack in HOW TO USE A KNIFE and Andy in PAINT IT! for the apprentice showcase. He was most recently seen in PREDICTOR and THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT. Additional professional credits include Will in MOTHERS AND SONS at Sacramento Theatre Company. He performed in productions with Hummingbird Theatre Company and Sacramento State University. Some of his favorite roles include, Kynaston in THE COMPLETE FEMALE STAGE BEAUTY, Padraic in LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE, Mr. Marks in INTIMATE APPAREL, and Actor 5 in BOOTYCANDY. Cole received his BA in Theatre Arts from Sacramento State University.

Rajiv Joseph

Rajiv Joseph’s play BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO was a 2010 Pulitzer Prize finalist for drama and also awarded a grant for Outstanding New American Play by the National Endowment for the Arts. His play GUARDS AT THE TAJ (produced at Capital Stage in 2017) was a 2016 Obie winner for Best New American Play and a 2016 Lucille Lortel Winner for Best Play. His play ARCHDUKE received its world premiere in 2017 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. Other plays include GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES, THE MONSTER AT THE DOOR, ANIMALS OUT OF PAPER, THE LAKE EFFECT, TH E NORTH POOL, MR. WOLF and DESCRIBE THE NIGHT. Rajiv has been awarded artistic grants from the Whiting Foundation, United States Artists and the Harold & Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. He is a board member of the Lark Play Development Center in New York City, where he develops all his plays. He served for three years in the Peace Corps in Senegal and now lives in Brooklyn, NY.

BURNS, IDEATION, CLYBOURNE PARK, MAURITIUS, ERRATICA (World Premiere), and LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES. He has directed at regional theaters including: B Street Theater, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Orlando Shakespeare Company, Perseverance Theater Company, and Sacramento Theater Company. As an actor he has appeared at many regional theaters including: 42nd Street Moon, American Conservatory Theater, The Aurora Theater, Bailiwick Repertory Theater, Capital Stage, B Street Theater, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Marriott’s Lincolnshire Theater. He holds an M.F.A. from the American Conservatory Theater.

Oscar Quezada

Assistant Director

Oscar is over-the-moon excited for the opportunity to work with Capital Stage and the entire staff! They have just returned to Sacramento after completing five years of overall college study and achieving their BFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Directing from Southern Oregon University. Before SOU, Oscar studied theatre at Folsom Lake College. They are very happy to be back in Sacramento’s rich and beautiful art community as a young professional. Oscar’s main passions lie in directing, technical theatre, education, and producing though he dabbles in acting and studies all areas when given the opportunity! He has been volunteering and working in education for nine years and currently holds a position as a theatre teaching artist with NORCAL School of the Arts. They are also a local drag performer (@the_fool_bush on Instagram)! He is invigorated by theatre’s continuing comeback and he hopes to make a positive impact on its revival. They would like to say thank you to his family, friends, and a very special thank you to Logan Heller for the opportunity of a young professional’s lifetime and the advocacy to be expected from theatre at the level Capital Stage is leading.

Managing Director

Keith celebrates his 17th year at Capital Stage, joining the company early in the second season. He brings to Capital Stage his varied experiences in the theatre, management, team building, counseling, training and corporate improvement. In his role as Managing Director he hopes to make Capital Stage a world class place to work, while playing an important role in the social justice efforts in our region.

Tony Gabrielson

Production Manager

Tony has worked with many theaters and dance companies locally and around the country over the last 15 years as a stage manager, carpenter, painter, and technician. Favorite productions include: DISNEY'S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST with Barter Theater in Abingdon, VA, ON BORROWED TIME at Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ, and developmental workshops of BOTTLESHOCK! Johnny Moniz

Johnny is thrilled to be a part of the 2023/24 season at Capital Stage! Johnny is a California-based theatre artist who has worked in all aspects of theatre, both onstage and off. He’s recently stage managed RIPCORD at Altarena Playhouse, and THE MOORS at Big Idea Theatre, as well as assistant stage managing at B Street Theatre, including A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD, ‘TIS THE SEASON, and THE FLYING MACHINE THE STORY OF THE WRIGHT BROTHERS. All his love to his partner Joe, who has graciously supported his theatre career!

Melissa Jernigan*

Substitute Stage Manager

Melissa most recently worked at Capital Stage on CLYDE’S, THE HOMBRES, THE CHINESE LADY, THE ROYALE, THE LIFESPAN OF A FACT, PASS OVER, MISS BENNET and HOLD THESE TRUTHS, and has been stage managing at Capital Stage since 2016. Some of her other favorites include VIETGONE, THE NETHER, AN OCTOROON, AND STUPID F##KING BIRD. Other theatrical credits include Production Assisting on Broadway’s LENNON, Off-Broadway: FELA! the Lagos Tour, David Cromer’s OUR TOWN, John Leguizamo: A WORK IN PROGRESS, BEAUTY OF THE FATHER at Manhattan Theatre Club, BREATH & IMAGINATION at Hartford Stage, OUR TOWN starring Helen Hunt at The Broad Theatre in Santa Monica and THE LASSO OF TRUTH at Marin Theatre Company. Tricia is honored to return to Capital Stage for this production of ARCHDUKE. Having graduated with a Master’s in Architecture from the University of British Columbia, she is ecstatic to be returning to the Theater Arts. She has previously worked with Music Circus, Teatro Nagual, Berkeley Playhouse and is currently working on shows at Cosumnes River College. Tricia would like to thank Martin Flynn for his mentorship and guidance which have been immeasurable.

Eunice Kim

Lighting Designer

Eunice Kim is a Los Angeles based Lighting Designer and is excited to be returning back to Capital Stage for this production of ARCHDUKE. She graduated from UC San Diego with a BA in Theatre back in 2018 and was a part of the electrics intern team at Pacific Conservatory Theatre (PCPA) during their 2019 summer stock season. Previously she worked as the Head Electrician and also did the lighting designs for the educational shows at the Sacramento Theatre Company from 2021-2023. Just this past summer, she was the Lighting Assistant for Broadway Sacramento's Music Circus. She also served as the Lighting Designer for THE CHINESE LADY seen last season at Capital Stage.

Rebecca A. Valentino

Costume Designer

Rebecca is delighted to return to Capital Stage where previous productions include HEROES OF THE FOURTH TURNING, GLORIA, THE WOLVES and THE GREAT LEAP! Rebecca has worked with many local companies including, The Aurora Theatre Company, 42nd Street Moon, Center REPertory Theatre and Solano College Theatre where she also served as the Costume Shop Supervisor from 2005-2012 and Adjunct professor of Costume and Theatre from 2007-2020. In addition she designed costumes for the Short Film GENERATIONS directed by Kourosh Ahari (The Night).She earned a BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and an MFA from the University of Michigan. Rebecca is currently the Costume Director for the Theatre and Dance Department at UC Davis.

Riley Cisneros-Gruenthal is thrilled to be part of the team for ARCHDUKE, her second show with Capital Stage (their work was previously seen in CLYDES). Riley graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southern Oregon University in 2020 with a degree in Theatre Arts. Previous credits include props designer for CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHTTIME, WAIT UNTIL DARK, and MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS at Sacramento Theatre Company.

Ed is delighted to be part of another season at Capital Stage. He has been involved in almost every production since the company’s aquatic days at the Delta King, from artwork for SPEECH AND DEBATE to appearing in FIRST PERSON SHOOTER. Logan is thrilled to be doing the makeup design again for Capital Stage. He has been working as a professional freelance artist for over ten years, he has also been published in various publications as well. His focus is editorial and stage, he loves that he can combine his passion for makeup and theatre. Samantha has been painting sets for over a decade in the greater Sacramento area. She's worked at Sacramento City College, Sierra College, University of California Davis, Sacramento Theatre Company, B Street, and Broadway at Music Circus. This is her fourth season with Capital Stage.

K. Kevyne Baar

Dramaturg

Kevyne is thrilled to be returning to Capital Stage as the Dramaturg for ARCHDUKE. A member of Viola Spolin’s Young Actors’ Company who became an Equity Stage Manager, and then the Field Representative for Actors’ Equity’s Western Regional Office, she returned to school in 2001 to work on a PhD. This led to her being Equity’s archivist at the Tamiment Library/Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University. Kevyne moved from Brooklyn, NY to Davis, CA in 2015, and in 2019 her book, Broadway and the Blacklist was published.
