A Note from the Playwright
I can’t seem to stop writing comedies. At the same time, I have lots of serious thoughts about the planet and about human nature and about hypocrisy. One of my goals the past couple of years has been to blend my natural affinity for comedy in writing with meaningful and complex subject matter. The Pact is a result of that concoction.
I saw the play Lungs (by Duncan Macmillan) a few years ago when it was produced at Hyde Park Theatre. I thought that play was exceptional in both its ease of fluidity from scene to scene, and in the way it addressed serious topics in often light-hearted ways. I wanted to try to achieve something similar in my own voice.
I guess I find people pretty funny in general. Even when they’re being serious. Maybe especially when they’re being serious. And yet, there are undeniably many serious, unfunny things happening in the universe these days. What a conundrum.
